Comment posted on Scottish Power Renewables announces another delay for proposed Tiree Array by Karl Hughes
‘Climate change’…the ultimate buzz word..
Webcraft, do you honestly think that covering vast swathes of Scotland or the planet for that matter, in windmills is going to stop global warming ? (or climate change)
I do not deny there is a wodge of data supporting global warming and climate change and that the speed of the change is the marker that has ‘flagged’ the issue for scientists. Man has increased the speed of change…but the change already existed…!
We waste around 40% of what we generate ! it would be a much cheaper option for all, to reduce this waste rather than to support either expansion of conventional or expansion of renewable sources ontop of conventional…this is however an unrealistic goal because we basically live in a commercial and greedy world.
If our government (GB and Scot’s) were to invest our TAX in saving and education about waste, insulation and banning the standby mode on electrical items, reducing the amount of street lighting, embracing LED tech, and even making it a legal requirement that new homes and existing homes were fitted with multiple energy saving measures Scotland could meet it’s 2020 targets…
Wind energy on mass is not a panacea, not even a stop gap… we have to re-educate the massess on waste and re-educate the multi-nationals that community based wind works well and that there is no place for mega-projects driven solely by commercial greed and share portfolio’s.

- Thanks Tim…I like concise information and this hits the nail on the head. Yes Tilley is generating cash for the island and projects on the island…
Nutshell: I take it what you mean is that you would prefer the contractual arrangement between the owners of Tilley and local consumers to be direct, rather than going through an electricity supply company.
Correct this is what I would have liked to see…
the bit about “but it would have to compete with the other suppliers in the market presumably”. gets up my nose as this is the point at which the venture moves over into the realms of cash generation for middle men.
As you can probably gather…economics are not my strong point…hopefully the environment and people is..
- Hi, these are my personal views….I am sorry if you get negative or indeed harsh retort regarding your views on Tilley…I get fair few myself because of my views on the Tiree Array. Always feel free to say high when I am home… we can chat.
I support community renewables for one reason…and I hope at sometime legislation and finance will allow this to happen in regards to Tilley. That the initial electricity generated is not sold into the grid and that the energy is consumed locally.
Surplus energy is a different matter and this could feasibly over a short distance (Coll?) be exported this is unfortunatelly not the case on Tiree “at the moment”
Eigg is a better example of an independent system.
I do not agree with multi-national companies developing huge windfarms for cash revenue…this is not a noble quest to reduce CO2 output…this is the generation of cash for shareholders…look at Iberdrolas profit margins…it is immoral and pushes people into fuel poverty..
I would rather Tilley had never arrived on Tiree for a use other than local generation….and I wish Tiree would make true use of a good thing for “all” the folk who live on our isle…maybe this will happen sometime ? what happened when the export cable was down for “X” amount of months ?
Tilley kept turning and generating “0”…insurance was paid…who covers that insurance ?…the electricity should have been used on the Island.
- Or on that basis 150 000 000 GBP to decommission Argyll aka Tiree array (@1Gw) ?
150000 x 1000 ? am I wrong ?

Iraq ? more problems ? I don’t think its in any doubt that this part of the world will have more problems…
I accept that there would be no assistance from the UK govnt… it takes a bit of soul searching to come to places like this … something I would not expect your ilk to understand….somebody needs to come here…and some of us were asked to come here by Iraq.
You individuals are part of the problem NC/K… you can never be expected to be part of the solution… you simply do not have the necessary skills or life experience.
- Cameron to make the worst possible decision on refugees
Jazz, you and your policies are in fact condemning more innocent and desperate people to death.
Merkels economic based decision is condemning more “migrants and “refugees” to abuse and death while seeking to travel to the EU.
Taking “real” desperate cases into our countries can alleviate some of the hardship these people are going through ( Families/Old/Young) solving these issues at source is the only realistic humanitarian option that makes sense… multiplying the aid given to the UN camps, vetting at these camps for the most needy cases… these camps are safe Jazz, have you ever visited a refugees camp ??? I have, many.
The countries dealing with the Middle Eastern strife and at breaking point are Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon these should be the benefactors of much needed foreign aid… and that is what we are providing and plan to provide more of, not only tents and clothes…but also teachers and doctors… the refugees in these camps are with people of the same ethnic and cultural background…and that helps these people with some semblance of normality until the issues raised by IS are resolved…
To answer your initial question as to if I “sleep at night” yes I do… 3 or 4 years ago when the local Shia and Sunni where knocking shit out of each other I did not sleep so well… but Basrah is now a dammed sight more peaceful than then, safe even… the economy is growing and the infrastructure is coming back online… there are no starving or suffering people here now… yet daily young guys, the educated and professional folk are packing up and moving with the exodus north towards Europe… this has implications for us at home, but also massive implications for Iraq… its is causing a national brain drain … a drain on Iraqi national resources that is filled by foreign workers like myself.
And now because a photo of one of the thousands of dead children has hit home at your previous head in the sand mentality, the left… narcissistic, “I” really care factions are stuffing these people …you feel en mass that you have to be seen to “care”… if you cared you would not be asking these people to risk all in some sort of EU green card lotto death walk…. Wake up and open you dammed eyes.
- Cameron to make the worst possible decision on refugees
So what do you suggest Mr Jazz ?
Do we take the refugees or do we take the economic migrants ? or both ? hows about some thought out comments from you ….
Merkel has put all of the exodus parties in the same pot, lessening the available support for the refugees from war and giving more to the migrants from poverty…. at some point we have to make choices as to who we can help,….oh and if you have not noticed Germany and Austria have now too shut their borders…
There is nothing nationalist or racist about what I have posted… realist yes.
Far from saving peoples lives…Merkel has sentenced more people to death in the Med and crossing the Sahara.
Maybe you would like to contribute to the solution to all of this hardship Jazz…maybe you have some thoughts of your own……then again, maybe you do not.
