Bookstart pirates swarm all over libraries in Argyll
Libraries across the county have just been under siege from mini-pirates looting book giveaways, special pirate themed Bookstart Rhyme times, stories and games.
This outburst of premature rapaciousness does not mean that Argyll has gone native. The libraries were celebrating National Bookstart Day and the pirates were aged from birth to four years old. Yes indeed. They sure start early in Argyll.
Run by Booktrust, an independent national charity, Bookstart is designed to develop a love of reading by helping children in their earliest years to associate books with pleasure.
Councillor Douglas Philand, the Council’s Arts and Leisure spokesperson (who obviously escaped being hanged from the yardarm), says: ‘Enjoying stories, songs and rhymes is a wonderful way to encourage children to be confident communicators and eager learners. Children who enjoy books every day do far better when they start school. All the family can join in, and share the fun that books can bring. I’m delighted that the Council’s libraries have helped contribute towards this’.
National Bookstart Day is about encouraging every family to make sharing stories a regular part of their daily lives together. Bookstart gives free books to families for children of around eight weeks, 18 months and three years old. It also provides guidance materials for parents and carers. And it’s all about fun activities related to stories.
Parents who would like to receive a pack should speak to their local Health Visitor or contact their local library in Argyll.
