One for a wet day – the World Firefighters’ Games

Held in Liverpool, the 2008 World Firefighters’ Games runs from 24th August to 2nd September. Such a great idea – underlining how fit firefighters have to be. Gigha islanders know all about this. They watched the island’s fire crew see off all opposition in short order in the Gigha raft race – the Tarbert Beach Babes (soggy nappies and all), the Olympics and even the Simpsons could make no impact on them at all. Why aren’t they in the World Firefighters’ Games, you might ask? Next year, perhaps? A Scottish first? Could be attractive to sponsors. Practical as ever, Gigha folk were relieved that their fire crew were the fastest people on the island. They’re sleeping better at night now.
