Islay’s Port Ellen Maltings has grain silo collapse
Early this morning (Friday 14th November) a grain silo collapsed at Islay’s port Ellen Maltings, shedding hundreds of tonnes of barley which fell around it. No-one was injured. As a precautionary measure, nearby homes were temporarily evacuated. With work at the Maltings stopped, structural engineers are investigating the cause of the incident.
Owners of the maltings, Diageo, employing 12 people there from its total Islay workforce of 47, say that the silo collapse is unlikely to affect whisky production.
