Black Bottle Islay Whisky Workshops in Celtic Connections programme
It’s a great combination – music and a dram – even in the imagination. The annual Celtic Connections music festival in Glasgow (keep an eye on the For Argyll Events Calendar for its torchlight launch parade on 15th January) has made a seductive addition to its programme.
It’s running a series of whisky tasting workshops in tribute to the official whisky of the festival – Argyll’s blended malt, 10 Year Old Black Bottle.
The tasting workshops will take you on tour through the glass, travelling the islands to get close to the secrets of the Bunnahabhain Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, and others of all seven Islay single malts that together make up 45% of Black Bottle. The other 55% is from the Aberdeen malts.
Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to experience the great new limited edition from Tobermory Distillery on Mull – the 15 year old Tobermory Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Thereare three Whisky Workshops in the series – each at 4.00pm in City Halls Studio One – on 17th, 24th and 31st January 2009. Fees are £15 per person and booking can be done online.
Black Bottle Islay Pipe Band looks forward to promotion
The Black Bottle Islay Pipe Band will be upgraded next season from grade 4A to 3B, following its triumphant best ever season. As we reported on earlier occasions, It took first in the 4A grade at both the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow and at the Cowal Gathering. It was also crowned Champion of Champions of grade 4A at that games.
Pipe Major Nigel Morris says that promotion ‘will mean an even greater effort from everyone as we start to put together a new selection of tunes’. With this year’s competitive season now over, this is when the pipe bands get down to the business of putting together and perfecting their repertoire of new material for next year.
Big wins for Argyll pipe bands at the Cowal gathering – Islay and Inveraray
We’ll have the full results shortly but – first things first – here’s the good news for Argyll. The Black Bottle Islay PIpe Band, relative newcomers, were winners in the 4A Grade and have been made Champion of Champions in their grade – a fantastic achievement. The Inveraray & District Pipe Band, in its first year in the Juvenile Section, came to Cowal from winning the section at the recent World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow – and won again. They too are now Champion of Champions in their grade. They are playing at the Connect Festival in Inveraray today (Sunday 31st August) at 2.00pm and can also be seen and heard at next week’s Dalmally Show. Evidence of the band’s strength and preparation for he future lies in their entry of a second band at the Cowal gathering, to give young musicians the experience of performing at a major event.
