The Cowal Elderly Befriending Scheme is a community based project to help maintain the independence of older people in the area and and help reduce the isolation they often experience. It has been awarded a substantial sum of £254,434 after a successful application to the Big Lottery Fund’s Investing in Communities fund. Continue reading
The recent Half Marathon run on Coll has raised £5,000 towards the island’s fundraising efforts for the building of a new community centre. They hope to start building in 2010, raising an estimated £2.5 million from their own activities and from funding applications to the Big Lottery and the European Regional Development Fund.
The community at Tayvallich on Loch Sween has been awarded £196,570 by BIg Lottery Scotland’s Growing Community Assets fund. This is just over 70% of the agreed purchase price of £280,000. The impact on a small, remote community from the loss of such a set of services is profound. The Tayvallich community took action a year ago to raise funds and buy the business themselves after private buyers had failed to materialise. The successful launch of the new fast passenger ferry service from Tayvallich to Craighouse on then Isle of Jura will have played a significant part in the business plan and the award of funding. The ferry is bringing more people to Tayvallich and there has already been modest growth in business at the shop and cafe, as people wait to board or wait for the efficient connecting buses to Lochgilphead.
The Jura Development Trust are delighted with their success in being awarded a grant of £146,594 from The Big Lottery – Investing in Communities. Good news for the island and for Argyll.
The award will provide 50% of capital costs for redeveloping the Antlers building to incorporate a tearoom, craft display and sales area and an Interpretation Display. In addition 75% of core costs over 3 years is included in the award to allow the Trust to deliver the project outcomes.
The proposed work on The Antlers will bring back into use a vital community facility by renovating an existing empty building in the centre of the village to incorporate a Tearoom, craft/gift display and Interpretative display of life on Jura.
The project will provide the community with social and recreational opportunities that are currently lacking and that will be easily accessible to all age groups and levels of mobility.
It will provide employment and enterprise opportunities both in the construction and running stages and provide a retail outlet for local craftspeople.
This is terrific news for the island and we would like to thank the Big Lottery for supporting this project.
