If you actually read what newsroom said instead of just defaulting to having a go,I would suggest that they were indicating that whoever had the item could leave it at various places, including an “established yacht club” (ie, somewhere people go and could find it). Anyhoo, how does one get off an island with a 3 foot diameter chunk of metal?

dougie, you might be right, but no-one drags folk from tearooms and cafes into McDonalds. And you can hardly blame them for litter louts dropping rubbish in the street. I live 4 miles from any McDonalds down here in West Wales and still there are wrappers lying on the floor. I have commented on this Methadone subject on another forum and some folk criticised me. I am jaundiced I will admit having spent the last 20 odd years sweeping up the mess left by drug addicts. I am not against methadone clinics per say, but they must be used to wean addicts of the brown stuff. However, I had regular dealing with addicts who had been on Methadone for years, over 20 in one case. Surely the purpose is for it to be used in conjunction with a detox programme to get them off drugs? And they haven’t money for bed for sick ordinary citizens, but they have money for the minority who are addicted to heroin? Seems strange to me, but I am a dinosaur and have a cynical view of the whole drug thing - Starting at 50 today – count down the days to the Wee Pictures’ centenary

Only a tiny percentage of Colonsay’s vistors arrive by yacht.

If you believe what you have just written then you don’t know much about yacht clubs.
Not many people would spontaneously come up with the rather rare and esoteric ‘yacht club’ as an alternative to the ubiquitous ‘church’ or ‘police station’ – and I find it curious that this was Newsroom’s third suggestion as opposed to, say, ‘left luggage locker.’

Point of fact: The use of a yacht club was clearly not our suggestion but our report of the suggestions made by Colonsay – who are anxious to use ANY possible responsible place through which this important artefact may be anonymously returned.
We imagine that they have looked at the range of possible types of visitor who may have taken the piece.
This would include visitors landing from yachts who, if they regretted a foolish impromptu illegal acquisition, would be in a position to arrange an ‘anonymous’ deposit at their or a neighbouring yacht club for onward transmission to Colonsay.
This is actually a bright reading of the possibilities and no daft suggestion from the island.
And in terms of ‘a tiny percentage’ – it only takes one. And it could have been a ‘merry’ prank someone would prefer to reverse somehow.

If the islanders suspect it could have been a visiting yacht then that is very sad. In light of this I have posted an abbreviated version on two yachting forums I frequent in the hope that someone might know something.

It’s sad to read these precious reply’s from yacht owners but, the fact is someone nicked it, be them local or a visitor by yacht or MacBrayne. Difficult item to smuggle by air.
Whoever you are, do just one decent thing in your life and give it back to the island and stop being an infantile tea leaf.
