The SNP just cannot keep Il Magnifico in his box. They sit on the lid and he bursts out of the side of it.
They gave him Foreign Affairs to keep him busy on extra-territorial matters but here is Alex Salmond tonight tramping heavily all over the patch that belongs to SNP Westminster Group Leader and Defence Spokesperson, Angus Robertson.
Mr Salmond is named as the BBC’s source in telling them that the SNP has got time for a House of Commons adjournment debate – Safety at HM Naval Base Clyde – next Thursday, 28th May 2015.
The debate will naturally focus on the issues of safety in the submarines carrying the Trident Continuous-At-Sea Deterrent [CASD], raised by Northern Irish submariner whistleblower, William McNeilly – not all of whose information has been accurate.
Mr Salmond is said to have told the BBC that ‘his party’ had secured the debate and that: ‘The SNP will continue to keep the pressure on the government until we are satisfied that not only have they have investigated Mr. McNeilly’s claims thoroughly and have acted on the findings but that those findings are put into the public domain.’
Why did this information on what is a defence matter not come from the experienced Mr Robertson?
Why was the narrative on the SNP’s strategy in pursuing this matter not given to the media by the SNP’s Westminster Group Leader?
The only excuse for this invasion of a colleague’s territory of responsibility is that the SNP’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, once comfortably esconced back in Westminster, now sees Scotland as foreign parts.
Mr Salmond was always going to take to the powder snow – but so soon? And for the second time – with his first excursion provocatively expanding on SNP’s UDI option.
With plenty or trouble back at t’ mill at Holyrood – A&E waiting times worse again, education in a serious mess, police still armed on patrol and all over the place [except dealing with housebreakers which Chief Constable, Sir Stephen House, has mysteriously pronounced as an ‘unethical’ concern for the police] – what can First Minister Sturgeon do to constrain the usurper now home free, down south?
