Francis Russell, Chair of the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum project at Loch Ewe n Wester Ross, gathering place for so many of these epic convoys has sent us this statement, welcoming today’s news of the long overdue award of a medal to those who sailed in them.

He says:

‘The Russian Arctic Convoy Museum Project are delighted with today’s announcement by the Prime Minister at PMs Question Time that an Arctic Convoy Star Medal and a Clasp for Bomber Command have been recommended by Sir John Holmes who headed the Committee looking into medals.   More details will be available from the MoD in the New Year.

‘The Museum Project are delighted with the news which adds to their efforts to create a lasting legacy, on the shores of Loch Ewe, to all those that took part in this Important part of our WWII history. It is well deserved by all those brave men who took part.

‘To each and every veteran, our country honours you at last.’

  • My father served on the Arctic convoys, on HMS Savage in 1941. He died in 2006 but I have a tape recording of his memoirs of the Arctic Convoys done by a local reporter in his home town of Kidderminster. It is very moving and was I think, broadcast on a local radio station about ten years ago.

    • We are certain that the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum at Loch Ewe would be dellghted to have a copy of this tape as part of their archive.
This would lodge your father’s story in a place which will be the central source of information on all aspects of the convoys.
If you would like to discuss this possibility with them, email Jacky Brookes of the museum team at: (Russian Arctic Convoy Museum)
