Revellers at the Campbeltown Christmas Lights Switch On were treated to an opportunity to see the draft of the architect’s plans for the refurbishment and conservation of Campbeltown Town Hall.

This part of the project is funded by the Big Lottery and Argyll & Bute Council to ensure that the community can have its say on the proposed plans and that the community agree that the Campbeltown Town Hall should be transferred to community ownership, for community use by the South Kintyre Development Trust.

The overall reaction of the public  – of all ages – was one of interest, involvement and definite support for the proposals.

The Campbeltown Town Hall project group had also done some background digging into the history of the Town Hall in the local library and in Argyll & Bute’s Archives in Lochgilphead.

A lot has changed over the years to the building, from being a jail to the current make up of the building. The last major renovations were in 1937, when the internal marble decoration in the entrance and the wood panelling were put in place.

Over the next few months there will be more opportunities for the public to see the plans and have their say.
