The scene early at the count. They’re now off – the boxes are being opened. Continuing snippets here.
And the Argyll First team are on the go. Councillor Donald Kelly wondering what the day will bring – following what has been the lowest turnout in Scotland.
No figures yet for Argyll – and in the Scottish Elections a year ago, our turn out was above the average.
10.10: Process well under way, crowd at the adjudication tables.
10.25: Ward One soon to be announced.
10.35: Ward 1 South Kintyre: Kelly / Semple / Colville . Donald Kelly, as we predicted, creamed it, Rory Colville as we did not predict, snuck in. Congratulation to the man with the Marigolds.
10.55: Ward 2 Kintyre and the Islands: Anne Horn / Robin Currie / John McAlpine. We got this one right – Currie has had a major take down but survived and it’s status quo in seats. Good result for Anne Horn and SNP – third in 2007, first seat in 2012.
11.23: Ward 3 Mid Argyll: Philand / Taylor / Macmillan. Dougie Philand romped it. The SNP took a seat – in second place, Donnie McMillan survived in third and Alison Hay – a good councillor – has paid the heaviest and the heaviest possible price for her misjudgment on the school closures proposals. Our analysis and prediction standing up pretty well.
Let’s hope Alison Hay does not prove the sacrificial anode for the administration on its incompetent, dishonest and damaging performance on rural schools closures.
12.00 ward 4 Oban South and the Isles: Mary Jean Devon / Roddy McCuish / Fred Hall / Alistair MacDougall. Mary Jean Devon FIRST. Prediction correct – 3 x SNP in. Pity about Gordon Chalmers – replaced by another Mull Independent – Alistair MacDougall from Fionnphort.
11.52: Ward 5 looks complicated in the time its taking. This one will be VERY telling.
11.58 Ward 5 – Oban North and Lorn: Elaine Robertson / Louise Glen-Lee / Ian MacDonald / Duncan McIntyre.
Fabulous result for Iain MacDonald – a substantial addition to the council and a straight player. Great progress from Louise Glen-Lee, up to second – and the Silent Assassin survives on the fourth preferences he touted for. So this is what Oban really wants? They say you get what you pay for. Oban has certainly bought it. And Neil Mackay is out. Predictions not doing badly.
13. 44 Ward 6 Cowal: SHOCK RESULT. Blair / Marshall / McNaughton. Ron Simon out. Prediction – up the spout. Cannot imagine what’s happened here – with the new SNP candidate coming top and Ron Simon not elected.
14.16 Ward 8 Isle of Bute: Scoullar / Mcintyre / Strong . No change. We understand from a reader – see Comments below – that the detail here was that Len Scoullar won 707 votes to Robert McIntyre’s 609 in the first round – with Isobel Strong just skimming it ahead of Labour’s Adam Bellshaw at the sixth count.
14.27 Ward 9 Lomond North: Maurice Corry / George Freeman / Robert Graham Macintyre. Councillor Danny Kelly. We reaqd this as a vote of support for George Freeman over the treatment that was handed out to him by the Alliance of Independents – and a schools campaigners vote. Ar least Alison Hay is not the sole scalp, which would have been unjust.
14.30 Ward 10 Helensburgh Central: Dance / Aileen Morton / Mulvaney / Robb. Right prediction. Wrong order. Food for thought for Gary Mulvaney and a triumph in planning for Councillor Dance.
14.45 Ward 11 Helensburgh and Lomond South: Kinniburgh / Ellen Morton / Richard Trail. Andrew Nisbit is out. Prediction – Two out of three.
15.00 We will shortly publish a piece on the overall position as it now stands and later tonight a situation analysis.
