ForArgyll on Pause

For the last few weeks nothing has been published on ForArgyll. Not because the scammers have the better of us, nor because there has been some gagging order. No, unfortunately and inevitably, the personal has intersected with the professional and the personal has, of course, become the priority. To that end we’ve paused all activity. We will leave all stories up and running, with comments open, and update on the site if and as we decide we can continue.

In the meantime, it’s been an absolute blast, and our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Lynda (‘Newsie’) who has created something very special and enduring since we opened shop in 2007.

From Island on the Edge of the World,
“If the diet of the St Kildans tended to be monotonous, it was partly due to their partiality for sea-birds. Fish, by comparison, was considered to be a very dull dish: not sufficiently oily, it was considered to have no “substance”. Often they would throw the body of the fish to the dogs and keep only the liver for making stuffed FISH HEADS, a favourite delicacy known as ‘Ceann Cropic’.”
My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
Another time in a coastal city in West Africa we had a night out for the staff and their partners (about forty people in all). We all went to a fish restaurant and shared two large barracudas. When the meal was called there was a mad scramble to get in first and get the heads, maybe the Hebrideans retained their African genes.

Elsewhere it was normal to see a ‘POLICE AWARE’ sticker on the car. At least now it is more common to see some police incident tape or a cone but after the Police Service of Scotland blunder I might have expected them to have a policy of clearly marking accidents that had been dealt with.

Online headlines this morning are “MPs attack Cameron over Lybia Collapse” when it was in fact only a few MPs (representing Parliament) on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Further down, so obviously not so important to the BBC, was the good news that British unemployment was down plus other encouraging information. This was changed mid morning and moved even further down to the less obvious “No Brexit effect in latest jobs data”.The banner headline re Mr Cameron will no doubt stay all day.

It was bold of this site to permit open debate, and by and large that latitude led to some very useful comment. It is hard to credit that some of the mindless material was truly contributed by fellow Nationalists, but in truth almost anybody can write silly things if it is very late at night. One person out of the 60 million odd in this country voiced a personal opinion – not backed up by anything or anyone else – he said he thought Boris Johnston had not really wanted Brexit. I repeat – one person in over 60 million without any corroboration on any sort and yet the Biased Broadcasting Corporation made it their online national news headline for much of the day. It’s not that they attacked Boris necessarily, it’s their total arrogance that they think they could do this to anyone they don’t like, thereby politically influencing the opinions of the viewing and listening public. That’s not in their Charter !

As the subscribers they deserve to be informed with fair and balanced news which is not happening – see todays headline ! Incidentally did you see the report of a few days ago that BBC reporters are paid about 40% more than the reporters working for other news media i.e. Sky, ITV, Channel 4 etc. Now that would have made a interesting headline for consideration by the ‘shareholders’.

She has accommodation in London which must be much more conducive to work in than an aircraft on a fairly short flight, and if she is not out playing down there then she should have plenty time to get on with whatever work she has to attend to. • I can tell you – she gets on with no work. I know because I’ve sat near her on many occasions – along with most of the SNP posse. I’ve raised the issue of MPs choosing the most expensive method of getting from Edinburgh/Glasgow to London on these pages quite a few times in the past.

London City is generally the most expensive airport to fly from, albeit extremely convenient if you work in the City – which the MPs don’t. I’m pretty sure there is no such thing as ‘Business Class’ – unless that entitles you to choose your own seat and hold luggage tho.

Rather than choose the very very cheap Easyjet flight, our MPs choose to fly from City, enjoy breakfast on the way down and a drink on the way back up as well as mixing with the business elite of London rather than the riff raff who choose Easyjet…

Having done both routes equally over the years, the main let down of Gatwick is the shuttle to the other terminal. 30mins flat from Victoria. Vs two hot and crowded journeys on the Jubilee line and then over to the DLR.

Good to hear JB confirm that virtually all the SNP MPs are using the gravy train at our expense. According to the BBC this afternoon I see one them has been charged with fraud. Wings, as always, make mincemeat of their pathetic stories. They actually show that the cost of powerless Scots MP’s totally unnecessary travel to Westminster has reduced since the Unionist MP’s wipe out by the voters.

    • Wings most certainly didn’t make ‘mincemeat’.

Two things are interesting here. Firstly, when in a hole, the SNP always have the backstop of ‘we’re no worse than anyone else’. Some measure. Secondly – they seem to think that because the flight was not technically a business class flight, spending £450 a pop rather than £80 is somehow acceptable.

This is the very day Sturgeon took one of her day trips down to London to preach about austerity and how bad it is. Leather seats, plenty leg room, free breakfast, free booze on way home – austerity Westminster MP style.

The same day that the SNP refused to celebrate the arrival of the first of a series of ships that have kept Grangemouth plant open and hundreds of jobs- thanks to, in part, a grant from..the Scottish Government. THey put money into a project that is totally dependant on Fracked gas – but refuse to allow fracking in Scotland.

The same day Natalie McGarry is charged with embezzlement – this is the same McGarry that you know wings will have defended in the past Murdoch.

Aye…a good one. Scotland is a mess and people like you will find any excuse for them. We should be booting them out and letting real politicians run the country. I’ve not mentioned CAP payments yet, of how Sturgeon incessantly talks Scotland down at every opportunity these days – apparantly Scotland being part of global trade again is not a good think. Apparantly bringing back sovereignty is bad. Apparantly leaving a totally corrupt and undemocratic organisation is to be regretted.

My prediction – in 4.5years time, the Tories will be in minority government.

And – the reason for the more expensive fares has been explained ad nauseam – they are flexible fares, so can be changed to cope with the unpredictable nature of parliamentary business.

Give it a rest – the incessant SNPBaaaadddery is getting a little wearing.

        • Wearing is it?

The so called point about the flexible tickets is a bit of a red herring – yes, they offer flexibility – and so you would expect at £3/400+ a pop rather than £60 for an Easyjet flight. Which btw, even at the very last minute can get you home for £146.99 in the worst case – the ‘flexibility’ argument doesn’t stand up.

I simply don’t understand why people like you Longshanks will defend the SNP against anything. Why do you not support me that a party that complains endlessly about austerity should at least demonstrate some restraint themselves?

These guys are on over £70,000 a year. Plus expenses. And you are defending them.

  • If I may be permitted, a few thoughts from an outsider…

I initially contacted Newsie because I was trying to plug my book, which she did an article on, but I had been reading For Argyll for some time. It was extraordinary to me that a news outlet/ website that was not from a main stream outlet could provide such a clear analysis of current affairs, regional, national and international that was comparable to what I might see in a broadsheet newspaper. Whether I agreed with it or not, and I certainly did not always, I found it principled, on the ball and very sharp in analysis. It was also clear that it was prepared to take a position on things.

The politics were not always my politics- indeed for the most part they were not. There is a human tendency to think that if someone’s politics do not agree with your own, then there is something perverse or contrary to them. That was not so in this case and even where I disagreed with what was being said, I could not say that it was polemic because it was explained with care, with detail and with data that was accurate. Sometimes then my views coincided with what I read; many times they did not. My thoughts on the illegality of drone strikes were in direct opposition to hers, yet she asked me to write an article setting out my case, while she then wrote an essay opposing mine.

I fell into the habit of reading For Argyll because looking round the country at regional news outlets I saw something rare. Tap into most websites of outlying newspapers in Cornwall or Caithness, or Lincolnshire, or Lothian, and what you get is stale fodder, uncontroversial, unchallenging and fearful of grappling with issues.

Not so in Argyll. Fury, anger, spleen, passion, rage, satire, enmity and folk who are just black affrontit inhabit the comments sections like bees to honey. Show me another such place where wars are fought, robust and creative debate is stimulated and intelligent rants are fired. I’d read just the comments alone, for the life of the community is writ large there and in glorious technicolour.

    It’s just downright entertaining!

In short I think you in Argyll have something special there, provocative of discussion, demanding thought in depth and stimulating; and you’re lucky to have it.

I hope to see it back on line soon.

      • I hope the party faithful come knocking to generate support for indyref2. I’ll take pleasure in telling them I voted SNP previously as I thought a Scottish focused Government would be a good thing, unlike other Scottish parties who must have some influence from big brother down south. I did not vote SNP to get independence and assumed once in power they would make best use of it. But now, they got wilder eyed and the thirst for independent blood grew stronger. We had a vote. I voted no. We’re now faced with another vote. It will still be no. And guess what, at the election SNP will definitely not be getting my vote again. Their opportunity to prove themselves in Government has been squandered with this obsession to the extent it overshadows everything else and they are objectionable on principle.
An example? Some Conservatives suggested a new Royal Yacht, SNP rose up an decried it as wasteful and a stupid idea. Did not one SNP MSP or MP think for a second that Scotland has a proud shipbuilding tradition and several limping shipyards its desperate to keep afloat and has a whole executive agency who regularly need to buy or build large passenger ferries? This could have been an opportunity to build on that but dogma stood in the way.
Instead, it is happy to piss £tens of millions keeping loss making Prestwick alive with no obvious plan to turn it around beyond a ‘space port’.
Decisions like this shake my faith that SNP really has any competence to manage itself, never mind manage an independent country.

The reality is, none of the other parties will do a bad job as by and large, the Scottish population and its public servants are sensible people. Roll on the next parliamentary election in Scotland. Time for change.

  • Well, doesn’t look like this site is coming back any time soon. I wonder if there is any appetite for a replacement?

What I have in mind is a site which:

    a) Reports news that primarily affects Argyll, and leaves national/international issues largely alone except where there is an Argyll context

    b) That adopts a neutral reporting style for most reports or, where there is a strongly slanted opinion piece, balances it with an opposing view at the same time or within days. Cybernattery or pro-unionist propaganda would therefore be confined to the comments section and kept out of the articles.

    c) That makes extensive use of guest posters, as I certainly do not have time to take on Newsie’s mantle

The primary thing that would decide me to go ahead with this would be a sufficient number of guest authors and editors to help me take the task on. I have all the necessary IT skills. The domain name ForArgyll.co.uk is already registered.

If anyone is interested in this then please get in touch – you will be able to work out how to find me if you do not know already.

Our Bradan, however, appears to be a poor, spent, husk of a fish, swimming in an ever decreasing circle in an ever shallowing pond of his own cess, offering nothing original, spouting received wisdom, and using what remains of his energy to blame everyone else for his misfortune.
Now who does that remind me of, surely not that other famously chippy Jock with a similar monikker, who used to lead the SNP?

  • Oh look, MM straining at gnats in pretending that the oil price is above $60 a barrel. In fact, the original prediction was of $65/barrel and was made by “Nae Fear Here” who then changed his name to “Hugh Jazz” as he found it increasingly difficult to sustain his ridiculous claims on this and other matters. “Hugh Jazz” then disappeared to be replaced very shortly afterwards by “A Salmon” expousing the same failed causes and using very similar juvenile language. These SNP acolytes have demonstrated, one after the other, the paucity of their arguments, intellect and, often enough, commonsense, as they slavishly try to maintain the SNP line.
Going back to the oil price, it is always expressed in US dollars and while converting it to pounds might show up the current weakness of the pound it doesn’t change the quoted price of the oil one jot. Whichever name you want to give to the SNP troll who posted his claim of $65, he was wrong.

And, typically, you draw attention to the English NHS while not mentioning the mess the Scottish NHS is in, thanks to years of mis-management and under-funding by the SNP, despite their repeated promises. And as for Nicola, isn’t it time she dealt with education and healthcare in Scotland rather than constantly harping on about Indyref2 about which she seems more and more muddled, wanting to leave one union while staying in another?

  • When ForArgyll went on to hold I was much saddened by its demise but always hoped that it would return and start putting our wee corner of the world to rights again.

It has always been a challenging site which was not feart to cock a snook at authority and challenge popular opinion. It was not afraid to be wrong and was honest enough to admit when it was. It was something of a beacon in a journalistic world that has become so clouded by vested interests.

I have often found myself challenged by this site. Its views have annoyed and delighted me in equal measure (and sometimes both at the same time!).

We are now descending into the age of post-truth politics where a mendacious social media has taken over from even, vaguely honest, accountable politics and has the power to ensure the election of a carpet bagging, mendacious bully into the most powerful elected office on Earth. It is such a shame that this essentially honest and principled site has descended into a playground for a never-ending blame game between nationalists and unionists. It has become its own version of Groundhog day.

I really would love to hear ‘Newsie’s’ opinion on events within and without Argyll again. ForArgyll deserves better than this!

When the people at ForArgyll actively encouraged so many members of the public to join in open debate online, you don’t just close it down virtually without explanation, and yes, without an Editor it is closed down. Whether there is some advertising income from the little that still exists could be the reason it has not shut totally. The attitude reminds me of a landowner who treats his tenants in the same manner – “Its mine, all mine,so I will do as I want – you don’t matter”.

You need to stop watching and listening to the lies of the MSM, the people have found them out as voter events in England, the US and soon in many EU nations are hopefully going to result in a clearing out of the stables. It won’t be easy but the truth will overcome.

Wikileaks seem to do whatever Moscow tells them – no coincidence that in their supposed search for the truth they never release anything from Russia.

At least lots of people in many countries are now talking seriously about the end of the Eurozone and possible break up of the EU which will be accelerated by the financial crisis when the UK leaves (excluding Germany, Britain’s contribution is more than the total net contribution of the 26 other EU states combined). Anyone wanting to join this disaster must be crazy!

They will be very handy when they visit there grand children in England . I suspect history will find that Sept 14 was the high point. Not one SNP supporter has ever answered my question why do you want to leave one club and join another especially as after we leave the French will try and make the French language the dominant language spoken. Perhaps AS will give us his thoughts on this

It has a bad habit of destroying countries Germany Spain the Balkins etc to name a few in recent history. But by a democratic vote we voted to go so I have to accept that and go forward

Hate is a very negative emotion but heh there are ways to deal with such issues.
You must hate the UN it is full of independent states. Have you never heard of civic nationalism?, so many different types of course . Your hatred has forced you into 1 way of thought. Bit like Steve Barlow who hates as well.
The democratic vote of Scotland was to remain. By 62%. Yet you would ignore this? The Scottish elections – you ignore this? Westminster elections – you ignore this? The No campaign literature of which there is plenty made it clear to Voters– vote No – remain in the Eu. Things have changed. Brexiters and britnats will need to get used to it.

  • Did Ms Minor really say that, AS? According to a report I’ve read today, she said that Scotland would have to join a queue including the likes of Montenegro and Macedonia. She also said that the official EU line is that there will be no new admissions before 2020. She also managed to say it without resorting to the kind of childish language that you regularly indulge in. Grow up, little boy.

  • Well AS you know history has a habit of repeating its self. In the early 1980,s Thatcher set up Scargill the miners leader and forced him to call his coal strike in March the worst possible month to start. Well Teresa May has set up Sturgeon.
Our first minister has no option but to declare a new referendum at the party conference again the worst possible time to declare. Europe is in turmoil with France Holland Italy and Greece all having major problems . The Brexit negotiations will not be finished when the referendum takes place. And maybe you don’t remember the miners lost

  • It boils, or at least renders down to this superb comment doing the rounds;Sturgeon: “the SNP is not racist or anti-English” ,,, the Gimp Fae Govan Sturgeon, you are 100% correct the SNP are Fascisti where the SNP Rats in the Sack have the political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader Sturgeon, with severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition, so when the SNP Rat Taxes kick in and the SNP “Screw up your Happiness” you know what to do if the Gimp Fae Govan Sturgeon has the balls to date stamp IndiRef2 and manages to take over “Total Control” of your country, then Scotland is finished and it puts a whole new meaning on “Foly Huck”…

    – Curriculum for Excellence – disaster
    – Centralising the Police – disaster
    – Named person – disaster
    – LBTT – disaster

Time we held them to account for their calamitous actions in May.

SNP trying to bring British Transport Police into Police Scotland. SNP told AGAIN yesterday it will pose more danger to public as well as large delay costs as well as more police requiring training.

George Orwell’s 1984 is an excellent read.

The SNP and their band of orcs are screwing up Scotland more than the tories have ever done……………….time to go.
