Great news for party people on 2016 Cowal Games Friday programme

Cowal Highland Gathering’s Friday night gig, held for the first time last year, is back by popular demand. The 2016 games run from Thursday 25th – Saturday 27th August.

The Gig at the Gathering, sponsored once again by Argyll Ferries, proved a major hit with locals and visitors alike in 2015 – and organisers are warning it is likely to be sold out well in advance this year.

The event will not only feature top class ceilidh music but also a bar provided by McEwan and a specialist whisky and gin bar provided by Argyll Vintners – plus a choice of food from Danny’s Snacks.

As was the case last year, the Gig will be held in the Stadium’s Ceilidh Tent, and will be headlined by world famous ceilidh band Skipinnish above], ably supported by the ever popular Heron Valley from Strachur and the Western Isles’ Trail West.

Tickets for last year’s event were being snapped up within hours of the details being unveiled and Cowal Highland Gathering chair, Ronnie Cairns, is confident the same will happen this time around: ‘We introduced this event last year to complement all the other various attractions over the Gathering weekend, and there seemed to be a buzz about it from the moment the details were announced,” he added.

‘The evening itself was fantastic – great crowd, great atmosphere, great food, drink and music and a great way to get everyone fired up for the Gathering’s famous Saturday entertainments.

‘We’re expecting not only many of the people who had tickets for last year’s Gig to want to come again this time around, but also lots of people who weren’t lucky enough to have been here last year but have heard about it and don’t want to miss out again.

‘Tickets are limited and are likely to sell out fast, so I would recommend that anyone wanting to book their place at a fantastic night out buys theirs soon to avoid disappointment nearer the time.’

Argyll Ferries’ marketing executive, Laura Wohlgemuth, says: ‘Last year’s inaugural Gig at the Gathering was great fun, a huge success and a fantastic addition to the Cowal Gathering weekend.

‘We are proud to continue that headline sponsorship from 2015 to this year and are absolutely sure that, with a new bigger venue, it will be even better.

‘It shows every sign of becoming an annual firm favourite.’

  • Not even trying to be negative about this, as it’s a great addition to the games. My question is, how can Argyll Ferries afford to sponsor anything, as they are receiving £millions of taxpayers money in subsidy? In the very unlikely event that they actually managed to show a profit, surely that money would have to be returned to the government, to reduce the ever increasing subsidy. Am I missing something about this sponsorship, or am I correct in what I’ve said?
