Islay singer-songwriter Angela Paterson’s stunning debut album Down to the River is released today, 22nd May, timed to coincide with a series of performances at Feis Ile, the Islay Festival of Music and Malt.
Angela is emerging as one of Scotland’s most talented new singer-songwriters with an album of beautifully crafted original songs, recorded and released by Argyll music label, Wild Biscuit – who describe the album as having ‘a honey-tinged vocal style, elegant lyrics, and a warmth that instantly touches the soul’.
Tracks from Down to the River have already had advance plays on Scottish radio stations, including Oban FM.
Influences of country, soul and pop come together in Down to the River and Angela’s island roots are never far beneath the surface.
Born and raised on the south side of Islay – and a 2014 CalMac Culture finalist, Angela says of her musical inspiration: ‘…some stories are sad, some are joyful, but they have all formed the person I am and the songwriter I have become. People come to our island with a light heart, but most leave with a tear in their eye looking out at the Carraig Fhada lighthouse as they pass it on the ferry. They realise how special our island is’.
Down to the River was written and recorded in Argyll, Scotland, in 2015 and 2016. From a chance meeting in Oban where Angela had been invited by Cal Mac Culture to perform at the first Scottish Rural Parliament, Angela and Wild Biscuit have developed a dynamic working partnership leading to an exquisite collection of beautifully crafted contemporary songs.
On Friday 15th July, accompanied by former Capercaillie guitarist and Wild Biscuit producer John Saich, Angela will be performing tracks from Down to the River in a special acoustic concert at Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran. She will also be playing live at the Isle of Gigha Music Festival on Friday 24th and Sunday 26th June.
Wild Biscuit is a highly selective label, choosing to work with artists in whom they believe and with whom they share a cultural affinity and a shared concern for the highest professional standards.
Down to the River is available on CD from Music in Scotland, available on iTunes and Google Play and in retail outlets across Scotland. For news and live dates visit Angela Paterson’s website here – and you can join Angela on her Facebook page here.
