Local SNP MP, Brendan O’Hara has welcomed the formal confirmation of the UK Government’s determination to establish the country’s first Spaceport.
He says: ‘In what was an otherwise bland and uninspiring Queen’s Speech last week I was very pleased to hear a firm commitment from the government that the creation of the UK’s Spaceport is firmly on their agenda.
‘Since being elected to parliament last year, I have given the Machrihanish bid my 100% support and I will continue to do so throughout this selection process.
‘I have visited MACC a number of times and have seen the tremendous facilities that they have to offer, including the required 3km runway already in place. The length of the runway as well the location of Machrihanish gives the MACC bid a considerable advantage over its rivals.
‘I believe the economic importance of securing the Spaceport for Machrihanish cannot be overstated. The boost to industry, tourism, employment and the required transport infrastructure could be transformational for the whole of the Kintyre peninsula.
‘I will take every possible opportunity make the case in Westminster for Machrihanish to become the UK Spaceport and will continue to put pressure on the government to make publish its Spaceport timetable as soon as possible.’
It is encouraging to see that a senior politician with responsibility for this area and placed in exactly the right forum for this issue, has come to recognise the potential enormity of the positive impact of such a project for Kintyre and for Argyll as a whole.
This is important support for the project – and there can be no doubt that the impact that the hugely increased and markedly active SNP cohort has had in Westminster is a hefty instrument in Mr O’Hara’s willing hands.
