Peston exclusive for ITV: Johnson and Gove on brink of declaring for Brexit

ITV’s Political Editor, Robert Peston, has told Tom Bradby on  News at 10 tonight, that Boris Johnson and Michael Gove are on the brink of declaring for Brexit.

Neither are apparently convinced that the Prime Minister’s deal with the EU – which has not yet been approved – gets anywhere near the sort of recovery of British sovereignty each wants to see.

The story from the well connected Peston is likely to be secure.

The question is whether the two can still be turned to the Cameron view. Peston said that he had been told that there was nothing anyone could do now to persuade them differently.

Should the two come out for the Vote Leave campaign, they could make a substantial difference to the odds for an ‘out’ vote.

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, might be advised to start getting her story straight as to why she refuses to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence when the UK votes by an overall majority to leave the EU, while Scotland, by a majority, votes to stay in it.

Because you can bet she will do just that.

    • I’m not sure about Gove, either, as he often seems a bit too impulsive, but Boris will decide on the course which most furthers his own career, whatever that means for anyone else. That said, to plump for Brexit would distance him from the City, most of which wants to stay in, though with special favours for themselves.

  • Our first minister may have realised that she has put herself in a dangerous corner. If England leaves Europe and Scotland stays in then for sure there will have to be a border crossing at Carlisle after all what would be the point of England leaving if migrants could come in the back door. As we now know one in eight Scottish companies would have left if it was a yes vote. I wonder how many more would leave if 92% of there customers were on the other side of a frontier with a different currency

    • To many “if’s” firstly its if “the UK leaves Europe”.

Secondly if the Majority of Scots vote to stay ( could as easily be the majority of NI, Wales or England vote to stay in or out)

If for example Scots vote to stay in, r Uk out…what then, maybe another reason for Scotland to have yet another referendum on YES/NO…but no chance of that if a win is not guaranteed… If YES… so be it, then Scotland would have to negotiate terms for inclusion, which would not be automatic ( as previously explained)…if NO… more Witter Witter, moan, moan…all pretty boring and nothing to do with governing with some success what we already have…

The poles ( pretty trustless ) show a close vote… the most vocal seem to usually be on the losing side… the silent majority seem recently to win…

Me… rather than be a hypocrite I will stay with “In”, “In” I am after all a believer in the Union, and in general the original principles behind the EU…

In regards to the comment “Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, might be advised to start getting her story straight as to why she refuses to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence when the UK votes by an overall majority to leave the EU, while Scotland, by a majority, votes to stay in it.” I think she has to do nothing of the sort…she is waiting for a 60% guarantee and also waiting to see how Scotland will vote… If the SNP intend to support a campaign to stay in the EU, indeed openly campaign for that… she best decide on why Scotland should be in one Union and out of another one… and will also be looking at two further referendums…the one of which can only be completed if Scotland votes out in another Indy ref… something the poll’s ( if they are to be trusted LOL shows nowhere near a magic 60%) seems to me the entire political shebang is losing the plot…

Meanwhile Peston missed Tim Montgomerie leaving the Conservative Party over the EU negotiations.

  • With Theresa May finishing off the regulations that will require expulsion of any non EU graduates who after graduation are earning less than £35k per year, we can look forward to our NHS having swathes of nurses, medical technicians and laboratory technicians ripped out of our health system.
But it won’t stop there. Education will be similarly afflicted as one only needs to consider Glasgow with Glasgow University,Strathclyde University, the West of Scotland University et al who have many many full and psrt time lecturers and research assistants who will now be flung out. Like the Nazi progroms in the 30s against the Jews, the Tories are going to destroy everything our society strives for. But the Nazi through out amongst many one of the greatest minds ever lived in the name of one Albert Einstein who fled to the USA. The British fascist Tories are set to repeat the trick as the burn the knowledge community on the altar of racism.

Sounds as if you’ve got a colour thing but that in truth is not uncommon on the Tory Right. So c’mon boyo give us more, tell us about the home born ones that you want in our schools, our universities and our hospitals. Tell us too as to your solution too for sending em home. Dawn raids by Theresa May’s Home Office Immigration Force. I’ve seen em in action when in Glasgow I witnessed an afternoon raid on a piazza shop. Boys in black, screeching Sweeney style to the front and back this was dramatic stuff as the local constabulary sat serenely by playing no part in the snatch squad maneuvers. Of course it transpired on subsequent enquiry that no “illegals” were found but it did show who was in charge. Folks like your goodself probably cream themselves at this. But hey, pray tell us more. You usually do.

  • Despite all the shouting the big question is not about whether the UK stays in the EU or not, since whatever the decision we will remain deeply enmeshed with the affairs of our neighbours, like it or lump it. And a UK which has exited in a huff will not be in a favourable position to negotiate a new trade agreement. The important matter is the fate of the EU itself, how it can deal with the challenges of the refugee crisis and of financial reform. Because if it doesn’t succeed then we will go down with it whatever our membership status.
