Local MP backs Campbeltown bid for first UK Spaceport

Argyll & Bute’s SNP MP, Brendan O’Hara MP [third from right above] , has this morning restated his commitment to the bid for the first UK Spaceport to be sited at Campbeltown.

Commenting on the bid by site owner, Machrihanish Airbase Commuity Company {MACC], Mr O’Hara said: ‘Space is a big industry in the UK and reaches beyond our vision of astronauts and spaceships.

‘The market for satellites is big business and could be a massive boost to our local economy.

‘Presently, satellites built in Scotland have to be transported thousands of miles to be projected into the ether ftom Kazakhstan.

‘The bid to host the UK Spaceport at Machrihanish could be a massive boost to the Kintyre peninsula. The consequential benefits of a successful Spaceport in our constituency could be a game changer.

‘As the Parliamentary decision of where to locate the UK’s first spaceport looms imminently, we all individually and collectively need to get behind this bid and show the UK government we’re backing this bid 100%.’

More information on the bid is at the Machrihanish Airbase Community Company website here.

Imagine the buzz of hearing on the news announcements of the latest satellite launch – and eventually of the first commercial space flight – from Argyll’s Machrihanish in Kintyre – and of seeing the events live on screen?

Campbeltown and Kintyre would no longer be Scotland’s hermetic secret but a technology, engineering  and tourism hot spot. This can be utterly transformational. Mr O’Hara is right to say ‘All on board for this one’.

    • I can’t help but notice you aren’t the first Nationalist who has tried to deride Machrihanish’s prospects of winning.

      • I can’t help but thinking you won’t be the last Yoonionist Britnat wrongly accusing Scottish self determination supporters of deriding Machrihanish’s prospects of winning.
And before the Yoons tell us of Wastemonsters great investment into “space” in Scotland. They are providing nothing ,only a licence.

Can we both at least agree it would be absolutely brilliant if Machrihanish became the UK’s first ‘spaceport’?
