In a typically resourceful move, the islands of Mull and Iona are loking at a communith buy out of Craignure Pier, the islands’ terminal for the CalMac ferry service from Oban.
The pier is owned – and has a history of substantial long neglect by Argyll and Bute Council which has previously led to disruption to services.
Island representatives are now in discussion with the council about taking it over.
The benefits could be significant.
The ferry operator would pay harbour dues and berthing fees to the community and not to the council.
And it would be very much in the community’s interests to maintian the pier responsibly, securing the reliability [weather excepted] of their lifeline ferry service.
