Ardbeg’s and Glenmorangie’s pioneering Dr Bill Lumsden honoured at 2016 Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards

The famed single malt whiskies of Ardbeg and Glenmorangie have taken top spots at industry awards celebrating the passion and innovation which make Scotch whisky unique.

As part of the Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky Scotland 2016 awards, Dr Bill Lumsden [above] was lauded for his dedication to the creation of Glenmorangie’s unnecessarily well-made Highland whisky and of Ardbeg, the world’s smokiest, peatiest Islay malt.

  • Dr Bill, who is Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation at the distilleries, was named Master Distiller/Master Blender of the Year.
  • Ardbeg Distillery, which celebrated its 200th anniversary this year, was named Visitor Attraction of the Year.
  • Glenmorangie was highly commended in the Distillery of the Year category.

The awards, which were held in Edinburgh on Friday, 4th December 2015, recognise and celebrate the companies and individuals which make Scotch so innovative and dynamic. A shortlist of nominees is decided by industry retailers and producers, with the winners chosen by Whisky Magazine’s editorial team.

Praising Dr Bill, the magazine said: ‘Bill is certainly deserving of this Icons title. He is considered a pioneer in the malt whisky industry and travels the world to seek out the best oak for his products.’ Of the Ardbeg Distillery, it said: There is only one way to feel the true spirit of Ardbeg and that is by visiting the distillery. With the traditional pagoda roof, whitewash walls and the smell and sound of the sea behind you, this is the place to go to experience pure Islay.’

Dr Bill, who has won a host of prestigious accolades in his career, said: ‘I’m honoured that myself, along with Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, have been recognised for our pioneering contributions to the industry. At the Glenmorangie Distillery we have always gone to unseen lengths to create whisky which fuses innovation and tradition. And I would encourage all smoky malt fans to pay a visit to the Ardbeg Distillery and find out exactly why our whisky is celebrated as the Ultimate Islay Malt.’
