Shock as Oban Express sold

The major Argyll-based delivery business, Oban Express has been sold to Menzies.

Staff have concerns about their jobs after the Christmas peak delivery period is over; and going into their own Christmases uncertain of their futures if the current workforce is reduced.

Menzies has also taken over AJG, which has a depot in Dunoon and would probably be used in a operational rationalisation to cover that area, meaning that the former Oban Express coverage in Cowal would no longer be necessary.

  • AJG was a very great deal more than ‘a depot in Dunoon’, and it’s rather sad to see two Highlands based and managed firms being absorbed into a multi national company – even though the directors of Oban Express are apparently to remain with the business, and the predator is a Scottish company.
I wonder how long before Menzies itself is snapped up by a bigger fish?

    • To clarify, we have not said that AJG ‘was’ a depot in Dunoon but that it ‘had’ a depot in Dunoon.
Both AJG and Oban Express have been a familiar and always welcome part of the landscape of Argyll – with impeccable service.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 17 Thumb down 2

  • The only reason Menzies bought AJG and Oban express is they couldn’t afford Stevenson Road freight. Number One in Argyll!!!

  • Sources close to both companies declared that they felt that merging under the Menzies banner is the only way they can compete with Alastair (I am the Doctor) Stevenson.
Mr Stevenson, although thought to be only one man,is an accomplished time traveller who also seems to have the ability never to sleep, and to be in an unlimited number of places at the same time.
The sources also said that if merging did not succeed in halting his relentless quest for delivery domination, they may have to consider inviting E Stobart to bring on the Daleks.
This writer doubts if anything will be successful,as it is impossible to hit a target which travels so fast that it is usually invisible.

  • Did Menzies previous just have their vans going around distributing newspapers and magazines? It seems sensible for them to look to mergers so they travel with a fuller load.

AJG seem to have depots all over the Highland area so I presume they needed someone who could complememt that in Argyll.
