The Argyll motorsport event of the year, the October Mull Rally, has had a tragic day and the rest of the event has been cancelled.
The Motor Sport Association is now working with the authorities and the organisers of the rally to clarify the details of the incident.
A car, driven by the well known and successful Mull driver, John MacCrone – a star graduate of the Dervaig bear cubs program and winner of the event in 2013 – appears to have crashed, with no other involvement.
MacCrone has been airlifted to hospital in Glasgow in a serious condition; and the worst of it all is that co-driver, Alex Mort, also from Mull, died at the scene.
Our sympathies are with the families of both men and for a close-knit island feeling for its sons.
