Comment posted With Heb Isles in for repairs, CalMac charters replacement vessel to reduce underprovision for Islay by James Smith.

“They fully justify being in receipt of another £1b of taxpayers money over the next 8 years to spend without any question or challenge, plus much more if they’ve got their sums wrong. There’s no penalty for them, nor financial protection for taxpayers.”

was the contract not awarded on a fixed-price basis – if so, there will be no more if they have their figures wrong

  • Not news that west coast ferry contract goes to CalMac
What a surprise this was! We have known, ever since the RMT bullied the SG into adding assurances in the tender regarding their members perks, that CalMac would be awarded the contract. SG has missed a great chance to loosen the unions stranglehold on CalMac and left the RMT to force CalMac to kowtow to its future demands. Like a previous responder I also think that CalMac should publish their 350 “commitments”. Serco may not have been able to run the service any better than CalMac given CMALs fleet but there is one thing for certain – they could not possibly have been any worse!
  • CalMac meets press at Riverside Transport Museum to announce submission of bid for CHFS contract
The Scottish government and the RMT have stitched up this tender in such a way that it is almost impossible for anybody but calmac to be awarded the contract despite the fact that their service is atrocious – the service to Port Ellen today has been diverted to Port Askaig because of what is reported as a very low tide in Port Ellen, even though the barley boat has managed to get into the same pier with something like 1500 tonnes of barley on board. the simple fact is that giving the contract to Serco cannot lead to a worse service than is currently offered by calmac.
  • RMT and John Finnie on manoeuvres to assist Scottish Government in electoral benefit from ferries contract award
You say that announcing the “result” before the elections “will also secure the votes for the SNP of CalMac workers and their extended families and friends”. I, for one, work for CalMac and have always voted SNP but not this time- I had hoped that new management would be brought in and most of the dead wood in Gourock would disappear but no, the RMT and SG have stitched up the contest and condemned the workers to more of the same crap as we suffer now.
  • Man who took this photo was told he was 8th standby on a full boat
On what date and at what time, in comparison to the sailing, did the man book? Many times people cancel and space becomes available between booking and travelling. Also, let’s have a bit of honesty – I am on Islay and people are talking about this situation but the gentleman who took the picture did not show it to “his hotelier” as he is an Islay resident – he showed it to a friend of his who is turning into a professional complainer about CalMac. Having checked his website, the cheapest room for two people is £150 B&B per night, perhaps this had as much to do with the empty rooms as anything else? Having checked, the website states that “Four of our five individually designed en-suite rooms can be utilised as either a double or twin room” so this must mean that the hotel was, in fact, empty – and all because of big, bad CalMac!
