In yesterday’s Traveller magazine [6th December], a weekend supplement to The Independent, actress Jodie Whittaker - who played Beth Latimer in the hit TV series, Broadchurch – was the focus, on Page 3, for a series of questions and answers on her worldwide travelling experiences.
Alongside recording exotica like an unforgettable eight hour hike ‘over volcanic mountains and sulphur pools’ on New Zealand’s Tongariro Crossing and driving for two days from New York to Wilmington in North Carolina – via a 200 mile string of islands – The Outer Banks, the Argyll town of Inveraray featured large in a fly-by of Thailand’s Koh Pha Ngan, Raratonga in the Cook Islands, Vancouver, Venice, Jordan and San Francisco.
Under the question of ‘Best Hotel?’, Ms Whittaker said:
‘My husband [the actor Christian Contreras] and I drove up to Scotland and stumbled across one of the most amazing hotels by accident.
‘We arrived on 30 December, where by chance they had a cancellation. So we stayed for three nights in The George Hotel, a pub on Loch Fyne in Inveraray, in a room with a log fire and we had the most lovely unexpected time.’
The many devoted familiars of The George will not be surprised – but will be delighted to find that a widely travelled person who bumped into this gem of a place by chance, reacted to it in the same way.
This is a well earned accolade. Long may the standards of The George remain as zealously guarded.
