Violent murderer jailed for life in Dumbarton

At the High Court in Glasgow today, Alan Kenneth Baker (25) was sentenced to 19 years for the murder of John Weir (36) in Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire, on 3 January 2013.

The jury had unanimously found Baker guilty of murder on 1st August 2013. He had carried out a vicious knife attack on Mr Weir and tried to claim he had acted in self defence, a claim the jury at the High Court in Dumbarton had dismissed.

Anthony McGeehan, Procurator Fiscal for the West of Scotland, High Court team, says: ‘Baker carried out a particularly violent attack on John Weir repeatedly stabbing him. He then tried to cover up his crime and claimed self defence.

‘That Mr Weir was caught up in this violent episode and lost his life as a result is a tragedy for his family.

‘As prosecutors we are committed to tackling all violent crime, particularly where the use of weapons is concerned.’
