[Updated below on tonight's show - with photographs] The last 100 tickets for the Tiree Music Festival are on sale today – but tickets 101 and 102 are going to the Oban High School We Will Rock You concert for tonight’s final night raffle.
Organisers approached the ForArgyll.com music editor, Campbell Cameron, who also presents the Wednesday Drive-time show on Oban FM, to see if two tickets to the July 2013 Tiree Music Festival could be the Star Prize.
Five senior pupils from Oban high School, including Michael Divers and Alasdair Jordan from Benderloch, Campbell’s home village, have been given an amazing opportunity to spend a month in Costa Rica this summer, carrying out voluntary work on a turtle sanctuary and with an indigenous tribe there.
To help cover the cost of this, the Famous Five are organising a number of fundraising events, including a raffle to be drawn at the end of the School’s production of We Will Rock You tonight [above], Saturday 15th June.
Campbell says: ‘I was delighted to help and so were Daniel and Martin Gillespie of Tiree Supergroup, Skerryvore, who organise the festival.
Tiree is such an original event and will fire the imagination of all the Oban High School pupils – so that will make a big difference to the fundraising effort.
The show has rocked Oban for three nights this week at the Corran Halls – with rave reviews from those who have attended.
Update 00.15 16th June: Campbell Cameron’s response to the We Will Rock You show tonight.
It was a big raffle with many prizes organised by Erin Jordan, Liz Divers, and Ally MacLeod who walked the West Highland way, ran a ceilidh and did the raffle so the youngsters can go to Costa Rica. Top prize was won by a lady from Taynuilt.
We Will Rock You was a triumph for the Oban High School drama and music departments who made it all happen – but the stars were the pupils, who all delivered on the final night tonight [and on the two preceding shows by all accounts].
The leading members of the cast owned the stage – were word perfect and sang their hearts out. Their enthusiasm was magic.
They kept the promise – They rocked us.
Campbell Cameron, Music Editor.
