The payoffs – or the lid taken off the pork barrell once again

It has to be said that the payoffs for the deals done are pretty clear.

Conservative group leader, Councillor Gary Mulvaney, gets control of his home area, Helensburgh and Lomond and is not troubled by any operational brief.

Mulvaney flew solo in the deal negotiations, without keeping his colleagues Corry and Kinniburgh in the loop [with resulting aggravation]. Consequently [?], Councillor Kinniburgh sees what we believe is his first ever sniff of power – as Depute Lead Councillor for Planning and Regulatory Services – the traditional honeypot brief.

Every single one of the four Lib Dem Councillors has a post, three of them lead posts and the fourth, Rory Colville, two Depute posts.

Given the exclusion of the loyal partners in the former coalition administration from even being informed of the proposed negotiations with the Lib Dem and Conservatives groups, Argyll First walked away.

The Argyll and Bute Independent Councillors group of two, chose to stay with the latest incarnation of the coalition – and see both of their members given posts -  Councillor Freeman retaining his and with what we think is an enhanced team of deputes; and his virgin councillor colleague, Robert G MacIntyre made Depute Lead Councillor – for Infrastructure.

Some councillors known to be ambitious – like Councillor Glen-Lee – are given complex multiple personal portfolios, which demand more than is remotely achievable if competence is the benchmark.

Will this stick?

The treatment of SNP Councillor Gordon Blair is a curiosity. Blair fought hard to save his own vote over the Struan Lodge closure. He got special party exemption to vote against his own administration’s agreed policy over Struan Lodge at the last council meeting.

Although he is being named as having three Depute posts, he has not been offered a lead post that might be the large enough carrot to persuade him to stay working for an administration leader with whom he has been so energetically at odds.

Is he thought likely to be an imminent departure not worth bothering to seduce?

Then there is the allocation of a Depute role to Argyll First Councillor John McAlpine. Argyll First have made it known that they have not consented to join this coalition. We have no information that Councillor McAlpine has any difference of opinion with his colleagues.

Councillor Elaine Robertson is away on holiday. Does she have any awareness of what has been going on back home? Has she agreed to support this latest coalition? Has she agreed to take the posts her name is now against?

There are a lot of imponderables in this mix. We wouldn’t count on its stability.

  1. Shambles, shambles shambles.

The SNP have proved themselves quite unfit to govern.

Personal ambition before Party and before principles.

  2. For Argyll thanks for this —what’s your source !!
I think it would have been helpful to have stated that local councillors are normally allotted geographically to the area they represent and in many instances there is no change.
What is not clear is in order for this coalition to exist what the changes in Policy will take place in order to satisfy Robb and his bed mates from Helensburgh. What policy deal(s) were agreed?
I am not sure if councillors are aware of this information.

Ann is correct Councillor Blair (SNP) cannot be bought.
The disgraceful EX SNP Councillors currently in position of power can answer for themselves.

  3. Heaven help us — Mars Mulvaney is back. Just typical he did not keep his fellow Tories in the loop.

Surely his first job, especially in the light of the utter chaos in the town centre because of the start of the CHORD project works, is to clear up the parking problems in John Street between West Clyde Street and West Princes Street.

Yes, outside the garage where he works.

  4. I wonder if there’s any provision in local authority legislation to safeguard us against councillors gathering onto themselves more posts than they can credibly manage?

  5. It came from one or both the two double agents – Councillor Gordon Blair and Councillor Ian Angus Macdonald.

  6. All of the above just outlines that Robb is attempting to stay in power by giving power to his past critics and at significant increased cost to the taxpayers.

Lib Dems and Tories now have their snouts in the trough just to gain power and get paid more. Why don’t any of the councillors carry out Lead or Depute Lead roles for no salary? Both parties talk about “Public Service”, but what has been demonstrated this week is that councillors have no credibility or loyalty and they will do anything for a few extra £££s and a sniff at power.

No wonder our youth of day are completely disenchanted with politicians if this is the example of politicians doing the right thing.

Mrs Morton and her daughter both given lead roles. Is this nepotism at the highest level? A Lead Councillor for Support and Customer Services? Is this a joke? This is a role that has been created for the sake of creating a role with absolutely no thought or associated job description and all because of the need to keep all the Lib Dems happy.

Am sorry to say that I am completely disgusted with the behaviour of many A&B Council Councillors. Morton talks about bringing stability to the council. What a load of bollocks. Its just another example of saying one thing in public and doing another thing behind closed doors. Seems the Helensburgh cohort of politicians now forming the new administration have no scruples, morals or even any personal belief in public service.

If they did, we would not be where we are now and Robb would have been left with nowhere to turn.

Am hoping that something nationally can be done about this at it is a completely disgusting state of affairs.

If this is democracy in practice, give me a dictatorship!!!

  7. They are part of the Mike Russell – Mike Breslin axis that have been plotting to bring down the SNP Administration. Others are Argyll First, Fred Hall and Vivian Dance (and Dick Walsh’s gang). Double agents because they are in the Adminstration but working against it. They issued an ultimatim that unless Councillor Breslin was Council Leader they would bring down the SNP. The SNP have gone and found more trustworthy partners – good for them, good for Argyll and Bute.
Also heard newsie’s blue eyed boys in Argyll First resigned but are still taking the extra money. Hypocrites.

    • Hi Anne,

I am not sure what medication you are on but can I get some.

SNP councillors however small still remain –just without Robb, McCuish, Semple–I would add a few more but I think some are beginning to repent!

Don’t know enough about Argyll First as individuals but if you are not in the administration you will not get extra monies –just the basic councillor stipend. In fairness to them Robb didn’t consult with them as he was manipulating in the background.

  8. We will have the Tarbert Loch Fyne mafia in charge of Adult care in Argyll & Bute.
Anne Horn who is the Lead Councillor in charge of Adult Care voted in favour of not giving a £26,000 grant this year to IDEAS on Islay which will result in its closure on 31st May 2013.
Anne Horn also does appear to be capable of replying to emails that ask simple questions!!

  9. As I’ve said already this is a shambles.

The behaviour of the SNP (including the ex-SNP, the resigned SNP, the suspended SNP and the still-as-yet-in-the-SNP) has been a complete disgrace. Their language about each other has been intemperate, their actions reprehensible and it does seem that they are only concerned about their puffed-up-egos and positions and continuing to stab their ex-colleagues in the chest.

Civil wars normally follow independence – but not in the case of the Argyll and Bute SNP.

The tragedy of course is that this is not over by a long shot. Civil wars leave festering memories and revenge is in the air as these internal conflicts shows no sign of receding.

The losers in all of this? Those deluded fools who voted SNP believing in a bright new dawn certainly, but actually all of us who live and work in in Argyll and Bute as the SNP Cllrs and erstwhile SNP Cllrs continue with their bloody civil war rather than getting on getting on with the job they were elected to do.

But perversely this might yet turn out to be of long-term benefit as quite frankly the antics of these amateurs in the Argyll and Bute SNP is the best advert EVER for a resounding NO vote!

    • Dick Walsh and Duncan MacIntyre must be having a laugh at this lot!
Makes them along with previous councillors Hay, MacKay etc seem organised and disciplined.

    • Well Simon i know you dont have any time for the SNP but the following are hardly paragons of virtue honesty and integrity.
      Dick Walsh aka Dick Dastardly
      Duncan MacIntyre aka Scrooge
      Ellen Morton aka Cruella Deville
Gary Mulvaney aka The Wizard of Oz
Would you buy a second hand car from any of these? NAW!!

What you mean by “the traditional honeypot brief” ??
