Cowal’s The Walking Theatre Company [TWTC] has been commissioned by Ayrshire Council to write and perform a play on Robert Burns at the anniversary celebrations in his birthplace of Alloway in Ayrshire.
The play, Happy Birthday, dear Robert, has been written by TWTC’s Sadie Dixon Spain.
Billed as ‘rip roaring, haggis eatin, whisky tottin night in with Caledonia’s Bard’, it will be performed on Sunday 27th January, starting at 1.00pm sharp outside Burns’ cottage. In classic TWTC style, it will tour the town, meeting faces from Burns’ past and finish with a slap-up 18th century beanfeast for the audience, cooked by Burns’ long suffering girlfriend, Jean Armour – brought to life by Alison Sykora as, we are told, no one has ever seen her before.
Rebecca Bloom plays Nelly Kilpatrick, who inspired Burns’ first poem ‘Handsome Nell’. Andy Patterson plays the high living, deep thinking poet himself. Chris Alexander playss Burns’ close friend, the lawyer Alexander Cunningham. Alison Sykora, as above, is in the role of the long suffering and three months pregnant, Jean Armour.
It is an honour for the Cowal company to be invited to be part of the ‘home team’ celebrations in 2013.
