Leningrad used to run an annual White Nights Festival that, even in the name, conjured magic. Now Dunoon Burgh Hall has put a twist on the magic with the notion of a Winter Light Festival – the name confidently defying nature.
The event will lead up to big bazooka moment with the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights – and they’re talking about a Light Party?.
But the event is only the end of it. A lot of the community fun is in the skills building and the creativity of the preparation.
A series of workshops with artists, musicians and performers – all free -
All workshops are free.
So what’s going on in the workshops?
Illuminated Advent Calendar workshops
Tthis workshop aim to end up transforming the front of the Burgh Hall into a giant illuminated Advent
Calendar. Your creative ideas are at a premium on this.
Everyone is invited to create a ‘gift’ that they would like to give or receive using a wonderful selection of coloured translucent vinyls. The translucent pictures will then be mounted onto coloured paper ‘gift box’ stencils and installed in the front windows of the Burgh Hall which will be illuminated from inside the building at night. These workshops are led by artist Sandi Kiehlmann.
Felting
This is about making Felt from the wool of sheep in Argyll – about community felt designing and rolling – participating in creating (probably) the largest ever piece of hand felted wool in Scotland from local Cowal sheep.
Your help is needed in the design and rolling of the felt in the main hall.
This workshop is suitable for adults and supervised children from the age of 6. Bring an apron (waterproof if possible), indoor shoes and an old towel.
Felt Lantern Making
Design & create your own lantern from the beautiful felt made the previous week during the big felt rollout.
Sweetness and light
An hour of shiny, sparkly and surprising creative play for you and your child – suitable for children aged 0-2 and their carers.
This workshop is led by Diane Thornton professional performer, theatre maker and clowndoctor.
Fireflies
Some fireflies have taken up home in the Burgh Hall. Help them find their way out. A drop in adventure for all ages.
This workshop is also led by Diane Thornton professional performer, theatre maker and clowndoctor.
