In a stunning achievement assisted by three short courses in Gaelic at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the inspirational Gaelic college on the shores of the Sound of Sleat on Skye, a Sardiniap-born singer,Elena Piras has won the Margot Campbell Trophy at the 2012 Royal National Mod in Dunoon after one year learning the language.
She also reached the final for the Silver Pendant, for non-native Gaelic speakers.
Living now in Pitlochry, Elena Piras was born blind and was caught up in the July 2005 bombings in London which left her with severe tinnitus.
A beautiful woman whose hair would see Rebekah Brooks off the park, Elena’s debut album is now out and she is interested in doing gigs to earn a living. With a singing range from classical through jazz to folk, she is hardly going to be short of interest.

I and all the other stewards had the privilege of meeting Elena at that competition, lovely lady, she had to wait as she was last on. (I was first to meet her!)

This was a huge achievement by Elena, and was well deserved after all the work that she put in prior to going to the Mòd. It should also provide a well-deserved boost to her career. My only regret is that I was unable to be there to see her performance!

How sad – your article emphasises the fact that Elena is blind, it also mentions that she is a beautiful woman…. but it says very little about her singing. She won the Margot Campbell Trophy for her singing – her blindness and her beauty are irrelevant. In this day and age it’s sad that first and foremost a woman is judged on her appearance, and her skills are secondary. (Do you ever see comments about the appearance of male winners – “he is such a handsome man with beautiful hair”? I think not!)
Well done, Elena, and all Mod winners.
