Paralympics: Simmonds beats Arlen to take Gold in new world record

This morning swimmer Ellie Simmonds won her 400m freestyle heat in a personal best, setting a new Paralympic record.

She has just taken Gold in the event., beating world record holder, Victoria Arlen into Silver – and swetting a new world record of her own.

Lying second until the last 100m, Simmonds just progressively accelerated, even though she loses about half a metre per turn to the longer-legged Arlen.

This is the will and the spirit any real champion needs. Magnificent.
