Motorbike pillion rider killed in collision at A83 Strone Point

Yesterday evening, just before 18.00, a Kawasaki bike was in collision with two cars at the accident black spot of Strone Point on the A83.

A 44 year old woman on the pillion  was killed. The car drivers were unhurt and then 51 motorbike driver is in a stale position in hospital.

One of the cars involved was an Audi and the other a Fiat Punto.

Strathclyde Police are asking for the drivers of another motorbike and another car said to be in the area at the time of the accident to make contact with them. They need as much information as possible to understand exactly what happened.

The accident location is a corner on the A83 headland opposite and to the north of Inveraray – a dangerous corner so tight it almost doubles back on itself.

Back in June 2004 this same spot saw a horrific accident when a milk tanker went off the road on the corner and feel to the rocky shore below. The crush impact of the fall caused serious injuries to the 44 year old driver who did not survive.

There is plenty of in your face advance signage of this danger point but it is still claiming lives

  1. Plenty of signage, but still plenty of accidents, so even more warning might be a good idea, given that the signage is similar to that applied elsewhere to less severe bends. If it’s the unusual severity of the bend that catches people out, then the signage should very clearly warn of that severity. There’s a mindset that it’s the driver responsible, the driver who’s at fault, not the road – but that’s a very cynical way of sweeping tragedy under the carpet.

  2. I was travelling just a few cars behind the accident. It was horrific, I didn’t see what happened arrived at the scene a few mins later. I saw the poor lady on the side of the road a doctor was performing CPR before the ambulance arrived. The bend there is awful. So sad. Rip

    • Good idea to contact Strathclyde Police even if you feel you have nothing to add. The smallest insights you would discard but might mention in conversation may really help to put the picture together.
And our sympathies for your own experience, Every one of us lives wiht the nightmare of being present in such an event.

  3. I think the problem is that it’s as if it’s not one bend but two: you think you’re through it, then it bends again, if you know what I mean. It can trick the unwary.
