Meteor spotted in Friday night sky

00.06 Friday 22nd September: A reader has just emailed: ‘Did anybody else see the meteor that streaked across the sky around 23.00 Friday night?

‘It travelled NE to SW, was white then cream and green in colour. I have never seen anything like it in many years of amateur sky gazing.

‘Seemingly reports have been face-booked from Glasgow and the west.  Hope others have seen this – even beats the news from Easdale Island.

‘It reminded me of the break-up of one of the Apollo missions, sadly. Hope others saw this – just unbelievable. Followed by a yellow smaller, intense shooting star around 23.30.  Hope you saw these.’

Editor’s update: It seems a meteor shower was seen along the coast of Northern Ireland last night.

  1. Yes, I saw lights in the sky, a group of five or six, travelling in a west/southwesterly direction. They seemed to extinguish (or hide above cloud) somewhere in the direction of north Jura. I didn’t think they were moving fast enough to be meteors, more the speed of a satellite burning up.

However, I’ve been caught out like this before, thinking I was seeing some extra terrestrial phenomenon when, actually, I was watching a group of Chinese Lanterns released into a sky full of stars to celebrate the life of a special person.

Last night’s lights were moving downwind and there was another poignant celebration locally. So, did I see what others saw?

  2. I announced sagely to my wife it was just a flight of eight lanterns as the orange lights passed slowly above the Holy Loch heading toward Sandbank. Didn’t bother taking a photo and even saw one of the ‘lamps’ fade out.

Oops moment when I saw the news.

  3. We saw lights very clearly but definitely not moving in the direction given above.
The appearance was of perhaps a dozen bright orange points of varied size with short orange trails behind each, all travelling in the same direction. Our location was Portavadie and the direction of travel was essentialy over Kintyre, i.e., from out viewpoint, roughly S to NW, and the elevation was about 30 degrees above the horizon. The time was a minute or two before 11 pm.
As the first account here said, the appearance and speed were very like the pictures televised of the space shuttle breaking up.
