Accidents block access to Oban from north and east

[Reopened - and information update below] The A85 into Oban is closed in both directions between Oban and Dunbeg because of a serious accident at Pennyfuir.

Strathclyde Police say that it is likely to remain closed for some hours.

The back road from Connell to Oban is also closed

The best solution may be to go to Taynuilt and take the Glenlonan road at the Taynuilt Hotel and work into Oban from that direction.

We are being told of sea kayakers on the way to Oban for todayls race around Kerera who are stuck in these closures.

Information update: The accident, just before 04.50, was between a car and a male pedestrian and took place near Pennyfuir cemetery. The driver of the Vauxhall Vectra invovled was in a state lf shock but was not injured. The pedestrian died at the scene. Strathclyde Police are establishing the identity of the dead man and are asking for any witnesses to the incident to make contact with them.

  1. What’s the timing of this event? BBC travel and Traffic Scotland are not showing any incidents in the Oban area but the Glasgow-Oban bus has just had to use the A816 to Oban.

  2. The start of the Oban Sea Kayak Race (www.obanseakayakrace.org) was delayed by an hour in order to wait for race entrants having to travel the long way round.
The event was another great success raising approx £1500 for the Oban Lifeboat.
The event organisers would like to thank all of the sponsors, helpers and paddlers. This year’s highlight for me was a seal porpoiseing just south of Gylen Castle, on Kerrera.

    • We have corrected the typo – adding a ’6′ before the ’85′ in the urgency to get the information out – and in a context where ‘Pennyfuir ‘- and ‘Oban – Dunbeg’ made it perfectly clear which road was involved.
Moreover, the detail of the accident was not known until some time later – that it was not two vehicles but a vehicle and a pedestrian – never mind that the pedestrian had died.

    • I totally agree… my friends family have lost an amazing young man and all you posted was how a sports event was delayed… I hope you (Mark Carter) never have to go through the ordeal this family and friends are going through now, Your comment was heartless.Thank you Kererra for speaking up, the family would appreciate that.

      • We understand your feeling entirely – but it is important to understand that when we reported the road closure through an accident and when Mark Carter passed on his information, no one had any information on the nature lof the accident and no idea that the accident had even caused injuries never mind a fatality.
Everyone’s sympathies are naturally with the family and friends of the man who so tragically lost his life.

  4. Another tragedy which once again highlights the importance of the need for another major road in and around Oban. Argyll Council are being very short sighted in abandoning the plans. The price will only go up!

  5. Firstly my condolences go to the family and friends of all parties involved. My comments were made in relation to the last paragraph at that time, the section referencing the sea kayak race. As the newsroom have stated nobody knew the details of the incident at the time of posting, nor was any remark made to the incident by me.

For the record I have gone through similar, and as a former police officer I have dealt with numerous fatal RTA’s, and some still come back to haunt me more than twenty years later. No words can help here; I just hope that those people affected by the accident have a strong family, friend and support both for now and the future.
