A mystery was solved this week when the sender of a message in a bottle was traced – all the way to Germany.
Local businesswoman Kirsty Morrison, who owns luxury candle brand, Zing Organics, was walking along Westport beach near Campbeltown in Kintyre last Saturday (21st July) when she came across a vintage Bruichladdich whisky bottle with a message inside.
The message read: ‘Looking for love or/and friendship’ and was accompanied by a mobile phone number and email address, part of which was the name Saligo.
Knowing that Saligo is a bay on Islay, Kirsty emailed saying she had found the message and asking if the writer would like one of her handmade candles as a reward.
She was astonished when she received an email back from Simone Simmer in Dossenheim in Germany.
Simone explained that she comes to Islay on holiday for four weeks every year, staying at Saligo. This was the first time she had sent a message in a bottle and was delighted that someone had received it.
Kirsty says, ‘I was thrilled to find the bottle with the message in it. I’ve seen many things washed up on the beach but this is the first time I’ve found a message in a bottle. I’m delighted that Simone responded to my email and I hope to keep in touch with her.’
There will soon be a very special candle on its way to Germany which is sprinkled with Kintyre sand so that Simone has a little piece of Scottish summer all year round.

What a great idea using local sand to promote a local product. I’m sure that it will be a great marketing initiative – sounds like it could even have been one out of the Bruachladdich stable of ideas?
