Comment posted Oban Bay Marine’s long haul on transit marina for Oban wins out by Scots Renewables.

Another strange comment from the conspiracy theorists who continue to believe that it is all a plot by a cabal of fascist restaurant owners.

The marina received over 120 letters of support in spite of the short timescale for comments. These were overwhelmingly from boat owners and yachtsmen, not from restaurant owners ;-)

To deny the whole town the money that this development will bring because some of it might go to the evil cabal might seem a touch ‘dog in the manger’ to some.

  • Kerrera has a lot of long-term berths. Oban is designed as a transit marina only, so will not be threatening this trade in any way. It is possible that Kerrera might lose the odd boat night from visiting boats, but in fact they are often full.

The new transit marina is likely to see a lot of boats that would otherwise bypass Oban dropping in to provision or to have a day ashore in the fleshpots. Overall I don’t see Kerrera suffering in any way.

With two marinas only a mile apart Oban will be in the unique position of being able to offer a choice of marinas depending on wind direction.

I would say that it is a win-win situation with plenty of business for everyone. Is your glass always half empty?

  • Great news.

A threnody is a song, hymn or poem of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person.

Quite appropriate. The promise that was the original ForArgyll is indeed quite dead.

I think I will stick to the Cowal Courier from now on. That’s a proper news site that seems to have your measure.

    Toodle pip!

Oh do cheer up Newsroom! The hybrid ferries are non-military ships being built on the Clyde. Surely something to cheer about?

Re. your concerns about staff training – I think you will find that staff require retraining whenever a new vessel is brought into service . . . each boat is different.

And please do stop all this ‘we hear rumours’ rubbish. No-one believes you. Come up with facts and their sources like a real journalist or stop smearing doom and gloom. Less fuel is less fuel. And the new ferries are also designed to have lower maintenance costs.

Now, here’s some more potential good news on the ship technology front for Scotland . . . CMAL has been commissioned to carry out a feasibility study for Scottish Enterprise to evaluate the technical and commercial possibilities of using hydrogen fuel cells to power zero emission ferries. If this goes ahead it could put Scotland at the forefront of another new technology, with the consequent design, development and manufacturing of hybrid engines being located here. Great news – though I expect ForArgyll will want to talk it down.

  • New Mobile Theme for ForArgyll.com
The mobile version isn’t triggered by my iPad, which is a good thing – but it does come up in an iPhone emulator I tried.

Strangely enough specific mobile versions of websites (as opposed to apps – which are here to stay) may be a relatively short-lived phenomenon. As bandwidth on phones increases dramatically and most displays become HD 1024 pixels wide or more so standard websites become more and more useable. I don’t come across many that don’t display well on the iPad.

A mobile version was far more essential on older 320 pixel devices like Nokias, but these will die out. The non-mobile version of this site (for example) is quite useable on a new smartphone once it is rotated horizontally.

Apps that do specific things on mobile devices are another matter – they are definitly here to stay. And for blog sites like this the mobile version definitley increases useability (but see below).

Some feedback – I couldn’t view the comments on the mobile version, but I was using an emulator rather than an actual smartphone. Can other people view and post comments OK on the new mobile site using an iPhone or Andriod phone?

Just testing the comments function on the mobile version of the site.

  • Scottish Conservatives underline common ownership of Saltire
It is Scottish Labour that really needs to up its game dramatically if it wants to keep a credible presense in Holyrood in the 2016 election. What Ruthie and the Scottish Conservative Party do is of little relevance.

According to Newsnet Scotland a recent poll shows Westminster voting intentions in Scotland as:

    SNP 39%
    Labour 33%
    Conservative 16%
    LibDem 6%
    Others 7%

If this doesn’t ring alarm bells for Labour nothing will.

  1. Congratulations! to Oban Bay marine for their success finally procured after great effort and tenacity.
Congratulations! too to Oban Lorn and the Isles Area Committee for showing progressive decision making and good judgement.
Oban will no longer be the only west coast town to turn its back on the folk who go to sea for leisure and pleasure!

  2. This is great news for Oban and to everyone involved in recreational seagoing activities and tourism.

The Oban Bay management committee have held on to their vision and should be commended for not giving up on this project.

This will greatly increase the options for yachts and ribs to allow overnight berthing and will enhance the seafront.

  3. It’s early days yet, but this considered decision of the new council’s area committee bodes well for the future, and hopefully today the Helensburgh area committee will be equally thoughtful in their deliberations on Colquhoun Square.

  4. Really good to see a positive and constructive plan for Oban Bay moving forward under the new adminstration. There is much to be done to restore Oban as a premier West Coast destination but this is encouraging and will be of benefit for residents and visitors.

  5. Brilliant/fine news indeed…I no longer have to rely on the wee ferry to get to/from Kerrera (Oban Marina) I will soon be able to run up to Tesco’s and get my hard biscuits and rum..

    Good effort enad every success.

    • I should have guessed that you have to go to Tesco for those biscuits. D’you mean the ones you have to tap on the dead man’s chest to get the weevils out, unless you go for added protein?

      • Aye…Well my boat will be staying at Oban Marina, it’s been their quite a while now…just makes the stocking up a tad easier…as for the weevils, I find that soaking the biscuits in a good dark rum gives them a piquant edge…

Got two weeks sailing to look forward to in a couple of weeks time…take the old girl out to my Tiree mooring…and forget about this place (work)
