I don’t recall any of the previous administration …

Comment posted Argyll and Bute’s new council: First ‘term’ report by Graeme mccormick.

I don’t recall any of the previous administration out clearing the verges. Instead of complaining those who are able should cut the verges and brush the pavements outside their property. It can be very satisfying and good exercise.

I didn’t say she was built in Finland I was indicating that most upper liners visiting the Clyde are built in Finland. Why did the UK allow the destruction of the mercantile shipbuilding capacity?

It was one of many industries destroyed at the altar of the City of London. When the same house costs 5 times more in London thanScotland you have a dangerous disconnect. Germany is successful because it has no dominant economic centre but several. It even managed to absorb the former DDR in a very quick period.

The London cuckoo in the nest is in fact dragging the UK down as it is the subsidy junky of the UK , just google Plaid and Newsnight.

  • Home Secretary’s whole life sentences for police killers pressures Scottish Government to respond
I can’t believe that Newsie didn’t know there is no such crime as manslaughter in Scotland. Instead we have culpable homicide. Unlike England our legal forefathers eschewed sexist terminology.

Surprised you haven’t suggested whole of life sentences for mass murderers like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown

They used to build ships like this on the Clyde. But as part of the union dividend they just visit. Most of them are now built in Finland . Ah the benefits of being part of the UK!
  • Argyll and Bute Council: the horsetrading begins
In all of this debacle we forget about the good people of A & B.
The electors dealt the hand and it is incumbent on the councillors to grow up and run the council and rise above external influence. As Tory and Lib Dem councillors as well as some independents were prepared to enter coalition with the SNP they were presumably acting in good faith so why can’t the council just run the council as the administration and if certain councillors get their nickers in a twist over something happening in their territorial patch they can force a vote and carry the day or be sent back to mope in their own wee corners?

I really don’t care who runs the council provided it is run with the interests of all the people of A & B and a bit of business acumen for the future.

This whole sorry episode was manufactured.

We need to move on. Breaking trust and similar words and phrases are cheap. Running a council with a budget of several millions is
    not.

Unless all councillors will fall on their swords and resign we are left with the them until the next council elections.

So who will rise to the challenge, gird their loins, kiss and make up and renew their commitment to their calling.

In Finland you can hire floating saunas which people are want to do over a weekend on the numerous lakes in summer.

It’s a pity we don’t have a similar vessel in A & B (unless the Dunoon Ferry can be converted) and force them all to sweat out their bad blood.

  1. Mean spirited and graceless sums up rather well the SNP council we now live under. When will the useful idiots who keep the minority SNP in power lift the scales from their eyes ?
On what is quite literally a life and death matter , this year is the poorest showing ever by the Council’s roads team with regards to road verge cutting . Many rural dwellers are living in great peril , having to connect to main roads out of junctions where no cutting has taken place at all this year. Some have resorted to DIY , but the poor and vulnerable , unable to fix the problem themselves are the losers . Shame on you Argyll and Bute SNP controlled Council .

    • Hard pressed council taxpayers are to spend their limited free time cutting road verges while the council spend our hard earned taxes employing spin doctors with generous salaries and pensions ? What next ? Empty our own dustbins, educate our children at home ?

    • Verge maintenance, autumn leave clearence, and weed control of footpaths and pavements are a thing of the past and no administration can be proud of this gradual neglect which leads to flooding problems, worse when freezing, and cracks to the roads and sidewalks, leading to costly remedial work. Surely a case of a stich in time…..

  3. Between Graeme McCormick and Islay for Ever, there’s a real issue here.
The ‘Big Society’ notion is a follow on from Margaret Thatcher’s ‘Care in the Community’ swerve which sat alongside selling off the public services.
It’s all about passing back responsibilities to the private sector, to communities and to families.
This can work to a degree but would need local/community funding mechanisms.
The other side of this has to be lower taxes.
That means electoral agreement on what we do not need and/or do not want from central and local government; and what core services we must have centrally provided to a high level, pay for and have real leverage over where delivery is poor.

  4. “Road verge cutting” does not describe what has happened along the Tarbert / Lochgilphead section of the A83 – ‘Vandalism’ is a better description of the work carried out by, I presume, the Council road team.
Destruction of bushes by some mechanical flail leaves us with a poor quality verge-scape.

BTW if the council road team was NOT responsible for this – my apologies. Is it down to Transport Scotland? Does anyone know?

    • Barmore 2: the A83 from Tarbet as far as Kennacraig is a government trunk road, and nothing to do with the council – unless their roads department has a contract to cut the verges, but I don’t believe so. Transport Scotland has contracted the management and maintenance of the road to Scotland Transerv – a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel.
