(Reopened. Updated 16.45 23th June below) The A83 is closed in both directions – we think it closed at around 20.40 – between the A819 junction in Inveraray and the A814 junction in Arrochar. The usual 60 mile diversion (an additional 45) is in operation – via the A82 to Tyndrum onto the A85 at Dalmally and finally onto the A819 Inverary.
The reason – high risk of landslip at Rest and Be Thankful – presumably because of the volume and ferocity of the rain falling in today’s early evening thunderstorms.
Transport Scotland are saying that local access will be maintained and that the A828 Lochgoilhead road can only be accessed from Inverary – but we assume that Lochgoilhead can be reached by anyone taking the Western Ferries service from Gourock to Dunoon and taking the Hell’s Glen road off the A815.
Update 01.15: Transport Scotland has confrmed for us that the road is closed because of the instability of the hillside following the heavy rain. The situation if to be reviewed in the morning.
Updated 16.45 23th June. The A83 is now reopened in both directions.
