(Updated below – 16,00) The devastating road crash between two heavy duty vehicles on the A9 north of Blair Atholl is now ‘at the recovery stage’.
Both drivers, understood to be in their 30s and from Glasgow, were killed. Their next of kin now have been informed.
One of the diversions in place following the closure of the road is on the A82 from Crianlarich, south through Argyll, along Loch Lomond and on to Glasgow.
This diversion, on the less than fully operational A82, will now last for at least three more hours with police estimating that this will be the time necessary to clear the A9 crash site and reopen that road.
16.00 update: Traffic Scotland has been reporting queues of jammed southbound traffic and long delays at Spean Bridge on th4 A82. This is probably the fruit of the diversion from the A9 closure and will recede when that road is reopened.
I can honestly say I’ve never seen the Loch Lomond-side A82 so busy, and this was at 5pm coming home. I saw some monumentally stupid driving too–which given the circumstances seems particularly foolish.

Funnily enough Stephen, we were on it around 6-ish and my comments to the Mr were, “How we’ve not witnessed a crash happening in the years we have lived here, I don’t know”.
Absolute lunatics driving on it. It seems like there’s some kind of mysterious vortex at the Stoneymollan Roundabout that robs them of their common sense.
Maybe thats what that daft thing with the ducks on it really is.

In a word “stupid”?
A82 today is a nightmare again at the same roundabout. Sheer volume of traffic trying to get through there. 10 minute tailback at least.

I don’t know what it is about the ’82, but there’s more stupid in 12 miles of it than the whole length of the M74.

My thoughts go out to all families affected. What a waste of lives. Having travelled on this road many times, I have never understood why any qualified driver should end up in a situation like this. It is especially worrying why two truck drivers who you would expect to be even more experienced, end up in a fatal smash. The three lane sections are not suitable for such a busy road, but it usually appears to have been a fault of one or more drivers when accidents happen.

Almost certainly driver fatigue in this case; of course we’ll blame the road, rather than the society that requires people to be driving at 2am. (The P&J reports a very similar sounding crash on the M5 last night…)
A82 update–heading south this morning, was wedged all the way from Stoneymollan to nearly Renton. The A9 ain’t the only one needing dualing.

Er, no, the tailbacks are forming back from where the road changes from dual to single lane. I’d dual it northbound Stoneymollan to Arden to give people more time to get used to that idea…

There’s another issue on the already dual section of the A82; investment in recent years in building the new roundabout at Lomondgate and enlarging the one at Barloan Toll (both with full time traffic lights) has made no allowance for future provision of flyovers. Given the poor record of investment in the trunk road network over the years was this wise?
