This post provides an idea of the size of the potenially contaminated MOD estate in Scotland

http://milconrandc.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/potentially-contaminated-raf-sites-in.html

The Secret Scotland web site provides a good indication of number of sites that the MOD own or once owned in Scotland.

Whilst there has been considerable publicity about radioactive contamination other contaminates that may be present include chemical weapons, heavy metals, asbestos, organic solvents and ordnance.

I believe it’s the MODs social and legal responsibility to identify contamination including radioactivity and the consequent risks to man and the environment at these sites and proactively make this information available online. In fact there is a stautory duty in the Environmental Infomation Regulations that requires authorities to :-

“(a) progressively make the information available to the public by electronic means which are easily accessible; and

(b) take reasonable steps to organize the information relevant to its functions with a view to the active and systematic dissemination to the public of the information.”

  1. I look forward to seeing the results of your FOI request, but that shouldn’t be needed for the people of South Kintyre to know what’s on their doorstep. The MOD should be volunteering the information in the interests of public safety. Sadly, the MOD is many miles away and has scant regard for the people here.

  2. How much contamination are we talking about here ?
giant 40 foot high ants battling bands of mutant nomads in a post apocalyptic waste land ?

  4. And now today the BBC is reporting the possibility of chemical weapons having been buried in landfill at RAF Kinloss, so just how much do we know about what went on at Machrihanish? How much does SEPA know?
