The BBC TorchCam page makes for strangely compelling viewing …! http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchrelay. You can get your fill of this spectacle, and I agree – the logistics are super-impressive.
Also, the ‘grey’ men and women running beside the torch bearer are Met Police officers, I believe. Specially trained for all sorts of security operations. Look closely and you see the radio microphones in their ears.
Cast your mind back to Beijing, and how the relay became a focus for protesters, and who could blame them. Who’s to say that those with a-campaign-needing-PR/an-axe-to-grind (take your pick) wouldn’t similarly seek to exploit the UK high profile torch procession? In the event, the fact that upwards of 7,000 genuine community champions have been selected has produced a positive event, one that only a fool would seek to interrupt.
So for either eventuality – fool or campaigner/axe-grinder – I am glad that Myles, and the other torch-bearers get the protection they deserve.

Is that the same John Swinney who has been kept hidden by the SNP since this ‘friendly fire’ incident?

The man who said one thing in private to cabinet colleagues, and then something quite different to the rest of us in public?

    No admiration from this contributor.

  • Baillie motion celebrates Luss Primary’s 5th Green Flag
I can hardly believe it either – some folk have lost all sense of what matters.

But Luss Primary School – what a lovely example of getting children engaged and motivated – well done to all :D

  • Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
So was this approved by the SNP HQ? It includes Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors. Or has their recent unshackling from party allegiance cleared that consortium as being fit for SNP HQ approval? Or are the ‘SNP’ members in the second group no longer members of the SNP?

    #totallyconfused

And maybe not for the last time, Fletcher ;)
  • Radically new council group changes all the dynamics: party politics dead in Argyll
The naivety of this contribution beggars belief.

    Deploy three SNP apparatchiks:

    * a councillor who wasn’t re-elected last year,
    * an MSP that chose to leave representative politics in Argyll and doesn’t live in the area
    * an MSP that came last in the 2010 general election

and get them to “run a training course for current & prospective SNP councillors”. Of course – why didn’t we see this was the solution to all our problems?

John Patick certainly has a future … as a comedy writer, coming up with stuff like that.

    • We weren’t taking a position on this, Mairi – and if we did it wouldn;t be far from yours.
we were looking at the evidence around the identity and function of the ‘grey runners’ and coming to a possible conclusion – which seems to have been spot on.
This too has been very cleverly handled – they really are ‘greyed out’ and attract no attention but do put protection exactly where it may be needed.
