Karl, Tiree’s covered by Ward 4 so your best bets are MJD and Alastair MacDougall from Mull. Know MJD spent quite a lot of time over on Tiree last couple of years hearing views.

- I’m gutted for Gordon, too. I’ve always found him very helpful and he’s done a lot in a quiet way. Alastair was a councillor previously and it’s good to have two island members again this time.

- Concern in Lochaber and Fort William on fate of successful marketing brand
I regret, Willie, that comments like yours do not encourage no or undecided voters to vote yea. If I lived in Lochaber or the Fort and heard that communities’ views and concerns were dismissed contemptuously as “drivel”,I would be thinking very seriously about what the future would be like with people who have that attitude in control.
This referendum has degenerated into a vile slanging match and is clouding facts pertinent to both sides. Balanced debate, with facts and figures, even if it is heated, is good – dismissive comments like yours are not.

Who are they kidding? They can’t even sort essential existing users problems.
- McGrigor questions Sturgeon on broadband provision for Highlands and Islands
Your Editor’s note says it all – the same is happening on Mull and elsewhere. In Tobermory, we have been told that nothing will be done until the back end of 2016.
My best speed is 7Mbps which is miraculous compared with many folks’ speeds but it is more frequently down nearer 1Mbps and has frequently fallen below even BT’s acceptable lower limit over recent months. Furthermore, the speeds jump about all over the place so even if you try to download a big file at a quiet time, it frequently drops out part way through.
A particular irony was that it was impossible to download the White Paper on Scottish Independence !!
- McGrigor to raise Highlands & Islands broadband provision at Question Time next week
So? Seil’s getting fibre so that’s all right then?
They’re installing fibre to several islands at the moment but in our case it won’t be connected till 2016. And even with the plans to expand faster broadband, there’s still a load of people who live too far from the exchange to get broadband, hence the satellite projects being considered.
I’m close to an exchange and supposed to get up to 7.15Mbps. Since the end of March this year when I started doing regular checks, the average has been under 3Mbps and often below BT’s bottom acceptable speed; not only that but the speeds can vary greatly over a short period of time. It has taken over 29 hours to download a 54 page safety manual I need for the coming weekend.
Mr McGrigor (as should all our MSPs) should keep hammering on about the continued lousy broadband many of us businesses and individuals are suffering.
- David Hatrick’s feedback from competitors on Mach 1 Stages rally
At last our wonderful (NOT) Internet has allowed me to send/receive emails and get on the web, albeit with a considerable amount of drop-outs etc. I actually emailed Lynda about lack of coverage and understand why she had a last minute change of circumstances – she also knows she missed a fantastic event.
I came down from Mull to be a radio marshal and I’d like to say how impressed I was with DCC and the way they had obviously worked with all aspects of the local community and how the local community did so much. Seriously impressed with the number of locals who volunteered as marshals and did a great job – with special mention of the gentleman who worked with me on the Saturday – we weren’t far in the first stage before a bit of mayhem happened – repeatedly!
Yeah, there were some glitches but I defy anyone to stage something this big with so many issues involved for the first time and not have glitches or find things might have been done better. And yes, feedback was sought and has been fed back.
Aside from the awesome venue and organisation – what was lovely was the welcome and general good feeling encountered with locals – thank you.
