Tragic news for the island. Ian was a tremendous member of the community. Thinking of Marilyn and the boys.

  • Time to go: call for resignations of CEO and two senior managers at Argyll and Bute Council
Well said Mugglemum! Let’s hear from more like you!!!
Sadly we WON’T hear from that other group of interested bystanders…headteachers…..since as local council employees they have been GAGGED!
For Argyll is doing an excellent job in generating discussion and offering a place to comment. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they have successfully invited those who would wield power to think again and consider their positions in the future as they act in the present.
There is noise in Argyll, an awakening that is long overdue. Long may it continue!
  • School closures LATEST: has Council’s Head of Education now gone off on holiday?
    Re-head of service on holiday…..
Timely indeed. Rat and sinking ship springs to mind, as the crew are left to steer the ship through an ever increasing storm. Perhaps it’s time for mutiny! Or perhaps it’s time for the local authority to do the right thing and make this ‘holiday’ permanent!
  • School closures: Argyll and Bute Council compulsory redundancies may come – yet education department salaries skyrocket
And what of the ‘consultant architects’ in all of this? The Herald front page says it all:-

“If CfE is to succeed, it will depend on liberating and empowering schools and individual teachers to take risks, to innovate and to generate new practice and structures, but the institutional structures of Scottish education are no longer fit for purpose.”

A quote from one Keir Bloomer.

Talk about a ‘rat’ leaving a ‘sinking ship’. He was a key player in the ‘monopoly’ that is Argyll and Bute Education Department, but he’s chosen the fast car to circle the board and is now playing his ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ card!

  • EXCLUSIVE on School closures: head teachers to condemn their own schools
Who would ever wish to be a headteacher in Argyll and Bute? This latest ‘fiasco’ highlights problems that have been building-iceberg fashion-for a couple of decades.

Too much power in the wrong hands has spoiled what was once a much admired Education Authority.

Too many people have been ‘stressed-out’ of their posts by bullying tactics which have gone on unchecked.

It is LONG overdue that action should be taken to topple this iceberg with a blast of global intensity that would see its component parts sink to oblivion.
The blast SHOULD come from those most ineffective unions which are supposed to support their members and fight their cause, but instead remain buttoned inside the pockets of the ‘HEAD of service’.

If the unions won’t support and the councillors are too scared, where is Mike Russell??
For Argyll and Bute to have any educational credibility in the future, this situation needs to be dealt with at source. Sack the head of service.

  1. Hi all, I was Kayaking, in the area alone on the day in question. I saw his boat in Easdale Harbour, but not him, as I set out. I rounded Insh Island, and on turning the Northern Tip, I saw him up on the lookout halfway up. I continued to see where he had landed, as I needed a leg stretch. His boat was upsidedown, on some big boulders, and it was too awkward to land for me. As I set off for the Northern end of Seil, I saw him returning to his kayak, he looked fine, with nothing to suggest anything was wrong, and saw me, and had oppurtunity to communicate had there been anything wrong. I believe I am the last person to see him alive………God bless.
