Really sorry to hear about Alister – he was a fine gentleman in my experience of knowing him.
Always a kind word and and a ready smile.

  1. Alister McAlister was one of life’s true gentleman. Always courteous, kind and generous and with an extensive hoard of interesting stories.
Argyll & Bute has lost another honest Councillor.

  2. There is little that I can add to the tributes above about Alister. He was one of the constants in the Argyll & Bute SNP and a regular attender at our monthly constituency meetings. Always pleasant, courteous and above all, determined, in his advocacy of the “Cowal” interest.

I discovered only recently that he was actually born in Greenock but that he had “wasted no time in getting on a ferry” to his beloved Dunoon. His people were of the MacAlisters from Glenbarr and he identified very closely with that Kintyre line.

Our thoughts go out to those near and dear to him.

  3. I talked briefly to Alister on his way to Inverclyde Hospital last week rather regretting he hadn’t taken the terrible car crash he had recently escaped from more seriously. But that was Alister. He just got on with things.
We will miss Alister but all the more reason for us to make sure that his efforts towards a Scotland we can all be proud off is realised.

  4. I echo all that has been said about Alister, a gentleman.

Dave McEwan Hill……….never misses an opportunity to to promote the SNP and independance. Shame at this sad time.

    • George, I think you missed Dave’s point. Alister was passionate about Scotland and its people and all of us lament the fact that he won’t be here to see the results of the work he, Donald and Skye did over the years. It is, in fact, hard to mention Alister without mentioning independence as it ran through his life like the word Blackpool runs through a stick of rock.

  5. For Anne Baird
    Well said!!
Absolutely agree! You cannot mention any of those three without noting what was their driving force. If you did not mention that you would belittle their core beliefs.
‘George’ obviously does not understand that!

  6. I knew Alister for over 40 years and I’ll remember him as a man rather than him being an SNP activist.
I think I’ve upset some other SNP supporters….Sorry.
