Comment posted Double edged message in government announcement of new Marine Harvest investment by john in kintyre.
Robert, I read SD comments as criticising a somewhat biased anti-fishfarming article.
To put some points not mentioned, MH intend to invest £15m in a smolt hatchery and further significant investment in processing which will create employment in an area crying out for it.

Please come up with better analogies, you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to compare fish farming with slavery,in fact I consider it insulting to the locally based workforce employed in the industry here in Argyll
An £80m investment in the present economic climate is to be applauded not decried.
Since all the usual suspects are or will be shortly on their high horses decrying this investment, please tell me where and what companies have made or intend to invest £80m in the West of Scotland or indeed the whole of Scotland.
I am not in nor have been employed in the fish farming industry.

Ron for your information, this is what the anti-fishing lobby do not want highlighted.
Go to www.nafc.ac.uk/Fisheries-Policy-Notes.aspx look at Trends in Scottish Fish Stocks published by NAFC University of the Highlands and Islands on 26th March 2013, especially page 20 and you will see the major target species of the West Coast Fishermen ie. Prawns (Nethrops)has increased in abundance by 70% since 2007.
The TAC (Total Allowable Catch) for Nethrops, or quota in laymen’s terms was increased this year 2013 on the recommendation of ICES but effort (the time allowed at sea) has been reduced since 2011 when boats were allowed 200 x 24 hour days to a projected 100 days 2013.
This is due to the Cod Recovery Plan which is inflexible in that it must reduce fishing effort year by year even though the the West Coast Fleet catches less than 1.5% Cod as a bycatch and therefore should, by the rules governing the Cod Recovery Plan, be exempt from the effort rules.
The “Giant Floating Factories” you quote must be Dutch vessels as the mean average length of a traditional West Coast Nethrop Trawler is between 10 to 16 metres crewed on average by 3 to 4 local men landing locally every day to Scottish Processors.

Well explain how the battery is lasting in I presume your laptop or I-pad? 5 days is rather remarkable I would suggest without a recharge.
Or is it a case of being frugal with usage or perchance a small generator or some solar come wind turbine device.
Another query, did you not beleive the forecasts and heed the SNP Goverment’s advice to fuel the car and take measures to make sure essentials were to hand to alleviate any hardship. - Kintyre suffering badly from impact of snow and high winds

I didn’t even bother to read down through your oh so predictable let’s bash fish farming diatribe. Why can’t you actually applaud a home industry that appears to be leading the world, and bringing enormous value to Scotland, without resorting to the same old anti arguments?
And before the usual suspects come out with the usual howls of protest, I am not a fish farmer nor do I have any connections with Marine Harvest.

No point in an open mind, SD? Would you have applauded slavery for producing cheap sugar, or sending children down the pits to produce cheap coal, in a different age? Maybe not exact analogies, but are you really promoting an uncritical view of an industry which has recognised environmental issues, because it’s a commercial success story?

It was a response to someone who seems to think fish farming is beyond criticism.

Good to hear it – the acceptable face of fish farming.

It was a poor response and not up to your usual standard Mr Wakeham. Bringing slavery and child labour into the argument is a bit extreme.
And how can you possibly know what I think anyway?
I do, however, believe that fish farming is worthy of more credit than the repetitive critical drivel FA churns out on the subject every time.

I make no apologies – it was in response to a rather acid performance by you. And so I’m wrong to assume that what you write is related to what you think?
