Comment posted on Karl Hughes: impacts of the proposed Tiree Array and divorce from the natural world by NTA
For those of you enquiring for technical details please be aware that such requests have been asked of SPR since the o/set of Tiree (Argyll) Array in Feb 2009
Only in June 2011 did SPR offer any visualizations and montages. For reasons, some raised by NTA, SPR has never posted, nor put these visualizations and montages in the public domain.
Subsequent enquiry for technical information from SPR has been met with ,SPR’s a standard response best articulated as :-
“ Can’t say…..won’t say… and only will say, when we put in our planning application “
SPR have been so tardy in offering any information on their specific web-page for Tiree(Argyll )Array that it can hardly be a co-incidence that following NTA’s very recent submission to Marine Scotland re SPR’s failure to meet the L&C process’ minimalist public information standard, that SPR made the first update, since July 2011 , to their Tiree Array webpage . Similarly A&B Council gave a link to the SPR webpage for information re the Tiree Onshore Mapping exercise. NTA advised A&B Council to check the link, cos there was nowt there !!!
Substantial technical information is on the NTA website (www.no-tiree-array.org.uk).

- Scottish Power Renewables puts Tiree/Argyll Array ‘on hold’ for 12 months
The very obvious explanation for SPR to put the Tiree Array on hold may be quite simple .
It would appear that SPR/Iberdrola cannot afford the project.
This Bloomberg link is worth a read:
Which also coincides with Scottish Government’s benign willingness in accepting the operating extention of Hunterston B (900MW) to 2023. If SPR was to come back in 12 months to develop Tiree Array (1200MW), the Array could come on stream in 2023.
Obviously,at this point in time , the Tiree Array is irrelevant to SG’s energy policy ,and with every possibility Hunterston B could be extended further, the proposed Tiree Array may remain in limbo ad infinitum .
- Tomorrow marine biologists start tracking sharks basking around Tiree, Coll and Hyskeir
As I type this I can see at least 5 basking sharks 50-150m off the shore in front of my house on Tiree. I think they are part of the same pod which has been around this particular spot for the last few days. Yesterday I counted 14 basking sharks, and earlier in the morning,I had the most magnificent of sights, a whale’s tail arching through air as it dived.
- Major environmental groups seriously compromised by wind developers’ cash
Hi all ..I have had to take some down-time after making a very detailed personal submission to the Tiree Array Onshore Scenario Mapping exercise. I wont bore you with details, but it is a Scottish Government inspired and funded study, originally conceived as “ THE TIREE MASTER PLAN “ . Over the 12 months since conception it was reduced to a study into possible implications, for Tiree, which may arise from any of the 4 possible Operation and Maintenance options for the proposed Tiree Array, if consented. Amongst its weaknesses, the exercise’s remit (1) did not address the socio economic implications of two of the options dictating a demographic transfer not seen since World War 2, and (2) in its analysis, assumed that part of the required housing demand, would be satisfied by over a third of Tiree’s holiday accommodation housing stock ,willingly transferring to a long-let market for offshore maintenance workers.
Exactly where it will fit in the grand scheme of things can be concluded from developer’s (SPR) opening statement to the steering committee :
The master plan should therefore be decoupled from the project consent process
This has kept me rather busy, so lets get so back to the originating issue flagged up in this post. I apologize if what I am proposing has already been suggested ,or implemented , by anyone contributing to this post.
I am staggered at these environmental protection groups taking the ‘Queen’s shilling’
I suggest any member of any of these organizations approaches the Chairperson and/or board to request the following
(1) Details as to how the decision was taken
(2) Was the decision put to the members for their approval?
(3) On what basis /conditions was funding offered/accepted.
(4) How has such funding been subsequently disbursed?
(5) How has such disbursement been reflected in the annual audited accounts?
NTA will, in any event request this information of each of these groups
- No Tiree Array campaigners play the Trump card
To avoid any further confusion as to what one can see or not see with regard to an offshore wind farm, please refer to SNH’s report Noo 103 ” An Assessent of the Sensitivity of the Scottish Seascape in relation to Windfarms ”
p13 ” The towers of 5MW turbines are likely to be 5m diameter .If we take 5m as an example then a viewer could theoretically see the tower at 50Km ”
This report recommends p 14 ;- “… a seaward outer limit of 35km for seascape units .. as a precautionary principle”
Re Robin Rigg : Its 60 turbines are 3MW /130m high
minimum 8km off. Tiree is faced with the possibility of 300/6MW or 180/10MW turbines in excess of 200m (600ft), the 1st row of which will be only 5km from shore .
