- If your man in Oslo is really there he cannot fail to be aware that although Norwegians live in a country with a very high cost of living they also enjoy a very high standard of living and, generally speaking, are content with their lot. The gap between rich and poor is far less extreme than in the UK and the standard of social and medical services is well in advance of anything that we may aspire to. Roads, ferries and other transport infrastructure-bridges and tunnels – is of a very high standard although they have much more severe weather patterns and terrain to contend with. They manage to protect their fishing and rural communities and have an adequate but not excessive defence budget.
Alcohol is taxed highly as a social priority and drunkeness is rarely encountered. If the price of beer is really your priority perhaps you would not like it!Incidentally, with their careful management of their Oil Fund the Norwegians have a fair bit of money in the bank for rainy days as well.
They certainly have fewer windfarms than neighbouring Sweden and Denmark but their hydro electric capacity is so well exploited that they are able to export most of their North Sea Gas to others, including the UK.
The crucial factor is, however, that Norway – a small nation of around 5 million people on the edge of Europe is independent and recently celebrated 100 years of self determination.

- The Stones, The Stars and Professor Thom
Genuinely sorry to miss this talk but Putechan Lodge is a long haul from Oban!
Professor Sandy Thom is the grandfather of my sister-in-law and was a genuine polymath-with wideranging interests and considerable expertise in engineering, mathematics, astronomy, sailing and almost any other field that attracted his interest. He was truly “a living example of the power of a flexible mind and a versatile disposition.”
During the war he worked on the aereodynamics of fighter aircraft.
Only after retiring from the Professorial Chair of Engineering Science at Oxford did he devote his undivided attention to one of his many other interests, the locatin and distribution of megalithic monuments across the west coast of Scotland and further afield. He worked closely with Marion Campbell in Mid Argyll. He is considered to be the father of archaeoastronomy.
If you are able, go to the talk and enjoy.
Then support the campaign to safeguard the Sighthill Stone Circle. - Disappointing stunting from Michael Russell
And, W.S., if you reveal your name, will we be entitled to make assumptions or presumptions about your ethnicity -as if it should matter? - Another question for Andrew Mitchell
Were it not for whistleblowers and serious investigative jounalists-for too few around at present-we would know far less about those entrusted with our government. - Campbell Cameron: Saying Yes
Pot, kettle , black….responding to Gus mackay is rarely a productive exercise but could I suggest that while the march was in support of Independence for Scotland, those who carried placards stating “YES” were in support of that cause.
My family had a long tradition of active support for the Labour party in Argyll and I recall how my father used to explain to me when I was a child the importance of countries like India and Ireland gaining control over their own destiny. Mind you he also spoke about the obscenity of nuclear weapons and the massive importance of the NHS and the principle that care should be free at the point of delivery. At that time the abolition of the House of Lords was a stated aim of the party. As a working class boy who got to university he would have been appalled at the notion of the Labour Party introducing student fees. I suspect that he would not have been singularly unimpressed with either Blair or Brown.
Devolution, even in times of financial stricture, has mostly worked well for Scotland and it has worked best in those areas where services, like Health and Education are in our Holyrood’s control and our own priorities are able to be addressed – contrast those with the chaos under Westminster control! The progression to independence is part of the process started in 1999 and perhaps the most significant factors of Saturday’s rally were the contributions from Dennis Canavan, Ruth Wishart and the growing Scottish Labour for Independence movement. - Campbell Cameron: Saying Yes
I am the bloke in the blue fleece and I am entitled to look older than Campbell Cameron for the simple reason that I am considerably older.Campbell is as hale and hearty as ever.

Incidentally thought the FM was thrown onto the political back foot this week. Sandwiched between Donald trumps dislike of windmill, the devo max card and his inability to answer such basic questions as taxation, defence and the oil fund.
Incidentally which Norway has achieved through some of the highest taxation levels in the world. Welcome to the democratic socialist world – £8 for a beer.
I welcome informed comment.

Basically it looks as if ,yet again,a Tory has tried that old jam tomorrow trick.
It worked in 1979 but more fool us if we believe it now.

Jam tomorrow! what is the difference between this and a fantasy involving Defence,Currency,Taxation and Energy.Only a fool would take a gamble on the latter issues, and a Tory is not responsible.

To be fair Campbell, ALL our tomorrows are fantasy, but we do rather rely on the sun coming up, the tide coming in and the unionists using every opportunity to dismiss, on the flimsiest grounds, the conversation Scotland is having about independence.

Indeed the cost of living is exceptionally high. It cost me 160 nok the other night for 8 litres of milk and a loaf of bread. In today’s exchange rates that about £18!!!!!
Healthcare child care and education for children is second to none, The Norwegian government run protectionist policies for it’s agricultural industries. Remember the butter shortage in Oslo at Christmas. In short high taxation allows the Norwegians to develop and maintain their oil fund. If an independent Scotland were to develop it’s own oil fund then the additional £1 billion per year saved would have to be raised in tax.
Incidentally alchol is exceptional highly priced that’s why Norwegians tend to have forspiel before they go outie get tanked up at home then go out and finish up. Public drunkenness is not that socially unacceptable in fact a saturady night in Oslo is not too different to a saturadays night in Aberdeen or Glasgow.

I thought the Huff Post had pretentions to credibility? – and it has offers from Waitrose (dirt cheap by Nog standards) in pride of place, so – recommending this stuff to us – you’d better be careful if you venture anywhere near the centre of Helensburgh.

I’ll be back in Helensburgh middle of March
Recommend I did nothing of the sort though I must admit the close trade relations with china are a boon for Scottish seafood.
