Comment posted Philand suggests civic reception from Council for Lochgilphead Red Star by newsroom.
This was a fabulous achievement,
Overall, the picture is looking like a crying need for a civic reception to celebrate major sporting achievements in Argyll – and the recognition might be a
spur for more.

- Point of fact: the report was that Mr Philand had emailed the incoming Provost – who deals with such matters – with an official request.
- What about a reception for ALL the Argyll Coronation Cup champions – not a bad Diamond Jubilee year effort.

- Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
We appreciate that it is inconvenient for a light to be shone on doings your party would prefer to keep hidden in shady places from those it asks to vote for it.
That is a dishonourable contract.
As the former Alliance of Independent Councillors [which had nothing at all do with Michael Russell ] knows very well, when it was damaging Argyll and Bute by its conduct during the 2010-11 schools closure wars, we were even more vigilant in keeping them under scrutiny and publishing on their manoeuvres.
We had to be even more vigilant because they were skilled at keeping things under wraps – where the SNP has conducted its acts of political genocide en plein air. All anyone has had to do is draw up a chair.
It should be obvious from our stance in recent weeks that we have no ‘vendetta’ against Councillor Dick Walsh, whom we dealt with arguably more harshly than we have done with Mr Russell.
A central function of our role is to contribute to the holding to account of those elected to serve the people. We do our best to fulfil this fairly – and hard. But we have no vendetta against anyone.
In Mr Russell’s case we simply feel he is a hot air balloon who has imploded over Argyll and done a great deal of harm – profoundly so to his own party, which we used to support. The evidence for our view is in the public domain. - Radically new council group changes all the dynamics: party politics dead in Argyll
The fact is that the SNP councillors in the Argyll and Bute for Change group are not ‘SNP councilors’ in council group terms – as rules forbid membership of more than one group.
So the ‘Russell camp’ is definitely no longer in the council’s SNP group, although presumably they will personally vote in elections according to their preferences.
And IF the other 8 SNP members have actually joined [as opposed to supporting [the Argyll, Lomond and the Isles group, there is no formal SNP group at all in Argyll and Bute Council.
If this has become the situation, it means that the SNP as a party has no right of purview over the behaviour of ANY of its originally elected councillors, none of whom would now be SNP councillors.
You have to say this is fun. It's not politics but it is a laugh. - Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
As given in one of the recent updates above - the missing person is Councillor Strong - from the, as of this morning, Argyll and Bute for Change Group. This would leave that group with 18 members but only 17 present to vote - which would not be enough to carry them to administration IF all other 18 councillors voted together.
This has to be likely but in the current situation the finessing is so arcane that one cannot be certain of anything until it's done. - Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
The fact is that they were quite prepared to work with the Liberal Democrat and Conservative groups - but were ordered by the the SNP to face expulsion from the party or to leave the administration that was planning just such a coalition.
We do not yet know what the SNP party position is today - although in our 14.15 update above, we have laid out the range of possibilities - but we do know that the 8 SNP Councillors have not resigned from the party. - Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
Sincere apologies for the temporary error - now corrected - and thank you for the prompt.
We are doing our level best - live - to get changing situations out to people as fast and as best as we can.
When we inevitably have the odd muddle [like cloning Mary Jean Devon], it is corrected very quickly.

A great idea from councillor Philand that an event that saw approx 200 people from mid argyll travel to watch Red Star in the final should be appreciated.A great use of tax payers money to show appreciation for all the hard work and time given up by all concerned.

Great stuff! Lets hope the Council acknowledge the efforts of Tarbert, Dunoon and Rothesay too then who won the cup this century meaning Red Star are taking the cup back to Argyll for the fourth time in 9 years. Well done all involved!

Thought for today.
Strange how often negative views lead posts and positive ones are quickly rubbished.
However, the majority thread is mostly on and upwards.
My congratulations to the team and Councilor lead effort to regognise success. An indication of a new era.

Why don’t they just have one big massive party to celebrate football in general?

I think its fair to say Dougie Philand quite righly is looking after his own patch and has always been a great supporter of sport (which will follow on in his new role with the administration). I recall Oban Saints receiving a Civic Reception following their Premier Two Title win in 1994 but nothing for Campbeltown Boys who won the same league two years later then Campbeltown Pupils who won the 1st Division in 1999 and followed this up to win the Premier Division in 2000. This was an Argyll side winning the top Scottish Amateur League and it wasn’t recognised by the Council. Probably because our elected officials at the time didn’t think to bang their own drum and highlight the achievement. So well done to Dougie for suggesting this and more importantly well done to Lochgilphead Red Star on their triumph. We should all celebrate success at any level of sport and Argyll – the time and dedication alone is worth celebrating and often is over looked. Well done Red Star!

LOL, the SNP/Tory/Independent coalition not talking to each other already. A letter to the press, why not just ask his new boss for a favor. Councillor Philand’s obviously has eye on top job. Civic reception for Manchester City as the boot boy’s granny came from Argyll.
I’ll be back.

So, Why was the previous administration telling us that we would have to save £1.000.000′s of the next decade or so, council employees losing their jobs, no pay rises etc.? If this is not the case, then there must be plenty of funding for new roads, ferries etc! Forget the civic knees up, and fix the roads first. Same old thinking with the new council!

Well done to Lochgilphead Red Star, following in a Coronation Cup Final win of Tarbert in 08..Dunoon Ams 04 and Rothesay Brandanes 03.
A Scottish Amateur Football Cup competition which Oban Saints and Campbeltown and Dunoon Ams cannot play in as they are in the Premier divisions with Rothesay now playing in another West of Scotland league.
Civic reception is a publicity stunt for Dougie Philand in his new Deputy Provost role for the whole of Argyll and Bute.

Sounds a reasonable proposal provided money comes out of local common good type money. Needs to be looked at closely as there will doubless be lots of calls for similar marking of achievements.
Dont think for one minute its a publicity stunt.

A civic reception paid out of the common good fund is an excellent idea. Unfortunately you can be sure that numerous councillors and other “hangers on” will turn up for free food and drinks.
Personally I would invite only the team and their officials plus the provost of Argyll & Bute. Nobody else.
