A diary definite for 10th December 2011 has to be Tarbert Film Club’s showing of the 2006 film, The Prestige – with a fabulous cast of Hugh Jackman, Christopher Bale, Scarlet Johansson, Michael Caine and David Bowie.
This one has one of the highest scores of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
It’s a mystery thriller set in Victorian London and in the smoke, mirrors, sleight of hand and mystery world of magicians.
Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) are magicians of the first rank. Both are possessed of spectacular powers of deception and both are cursed with unrelenting envy for the skills of the other.
When Alfred performs a breathtaking trick for which there seems no logical explanation, the previously friendly competition between the two turns to deadly rivalry.
