A wonderfully practical initiative from Stirling Council has set the standard for supportive collaboration between local authorities and the self-help spirit of rural communities.
Stirling has spend under £50,000 on20 snow ploughs that can be fitted to tractors and is recruiting farmers to help keep non-major roads open where they live. The council’s gritters will do the major roads as usual.
Distributing the 20 snow ploughs around local farmers in strategic parts of the area will let snow get cleared as soon as it has fallen and will help Stirling as a whole to function much better than it was able to do last year.
This is an affordable, do-able and common sense approach that other councils like Aergyll and Bute. with remote areas to keep going would do well to copy.

A Council with common sense. See they are out there! Its just ours thats abysmal.
Wonderful to see some joined up thinking for once.

Dare I say it? Normal for Norway. There it’s a nice sideline for local farmers to clear their neighbours’ driveways. Well, in the country anyway.
