Defence Secretary Liam Fox’s personal friend, Adam Werritty, is now known to have visited him at the Ministry of Defence 22 times in 16 months; and to have been present during 18 foreign tours or visits by Dr Fox.
Mr Werritty has no official role at the MoD or on Dr Fox’s personal staff. He has no security clearance.
It is now known that, on at least one occasion – an unminuted meeting with a defence industry supplier in Dubai at which no MoD personnel were present – 20% of the time was spent on the Defence Secretary being given a briefing on official matters which have to be secure – with Mr Werritty present to hear it.
Shadow Defence Secretary, Labour’s Jim Murphy has highlighted one very telling point – that when Dr Fox was Conservative Shadow Health Secretary, his friend set up a health consultancy – in which they were both investors., That was wound down and when Dr Fox, in government, became Defence Secretary, Mr Werrity set up a defence consultancy, Defence Futures, now too wound down.
The question the Defence Secretary has to answer now is not what Mr Werrity was not doing at the MoD meetings with him and at the 18 foreign tour occasions – but, very precisely, what he was doing.

The BBC, if not the rest of the media, seem to be concentrating on what Liam Fox has or hasn’t done, and it would be good if they could devote as much effort on researching the history of Mr Werritty – you’ve shown that it’s likely to be very interesting.
